Another IP submission :D

This was my OSL theme entry for this IP round. The figure is from the War Crow line by Corvus Belli. It was painted to be heavily contrasted.

I hope you like it :D

Okay, after several requests (and a couple of accusations of photoshop shenanigans lol) by PM about this mini.... here it is again, completely unedited (apart from being resized for the forum). No cropping, no levels, no white balance, no PS background.

Personally, I can\'t see what the fuss is about. Adding a PS background seems the norm to me... all that I did was use a background graduating from black to a sampled colour ???

That\'s a fantastic example of OSL BB. One of the best I\'ve seen. Excellent work man! Only slight crit is the rocket looks a bit \'rough\' but that\'s small potatoes compared to the rest...

Hi, Doubting Thomas here... :)

Beezlebrush, I PM\'ed you about this one, but seeing as you\'re happy to discuss on the forums, let\'s discuss.

I still think it looks unconvincing, irrespective of whether the background is unedited. To my eye, and for a second opinion from my wife (who knows a little about miniatures and photography) it looks photoshopped.

Whether it is or isn\'t, still is besides the point - it LOOKS photoshopped, so even if you have painted it as is, without the aid of post-production techniques, to me that makes the end result poorer for it.

The particular areas of the mini that I am talking about are;

the torch
the front-lit area of the cloak
the back of the cloak where it is chequered.
in fact most of the highlighting on the miniature itself, as well as the flat look to the red area and painted eye of the rocket.

Now that\'s not to say it all looks odd, I think the ground area and shadows on the ground and rocks looks great, and perfectly natural - much like some of the other pic\'s you have in your gallery, which BTW I like very much.
But overall, this picture looks very different from most of your other ones as well and I can\'t fathom why that is the case, as most of your other ones are great. So I must stand by my doubting thomas opinion I\'m afraid. I know it\'s sometimes difficult to take people\'s negative opinions (don\'t worry - I\'ve had my share too :)) but the world would be a boring place if we all agreed with each other all the time wouldn\'t it?

wereweevil... not that I feel I have to justify my work to you or anybody else.... but that is a pretty big and public accusation.

Okay, you\'ve made it pretty clear that you don\'t like this mini, which is fine. You\'ve made it abundantly clear that you think it\'s nothing but a photoshop cheat - and it seems that nothing I can say will persuade you (or your wife - who knows all about miniatures and photography).

What a singularly ridiculous statement!!!

I painted this for the Iron Painter competition - an online competition - which is judged on a whole package - the theme, the technique, the aesthetic and the PHOTOGRAPHY. This was painted with all that in mind.

All the blends were painted wet-in-wet and then glazed with lots of thin watery glazes. This was then bolstered with more solid colour to add hot spots and specular highlights added in progressive and closely matched tones upto white or the brightest colour I could use. I used both blending and layering together as I think the lighting needs to be punchy and not necessarily very smoothly blended. As I stated, I wanted this to be highly contrasted... which I think it is.

There is no rocket science here at all (\'scuse the pun).... I just placed the hotspots where I thought they should be.

Here\'s some close ups. Now this is the LAST TIME I\'m going to post any updated pics of this, take it or leave it.

It would indeed, except here you\'re conflating opinion with fact. It\'s quite obvious that Beelzebrush didn\'t manipulate the photo as you have said, that\'s a fact. Your \"opinion\" is just wrong. It\'s like saying that in your opinion the world is flat lol

Wereweevil:

Wow. Saying a mini looks \"Photoshopped\" is a pretty big accusation, especially when the pic doesn\'t look much different from lots of other heavily \"source-lighted\" paint jobs out there. That\'s not just saying the paint job isn\'t good, you\'re making an accusation of dishonesty.

So unless you have any proof at all to back up your words... my advice is eat the crow and apologize now. If not... stay away from my gallery, because I try a little OSL from time to time too.

Having an opinion about a mini and saying it is just photoshopped are two different things entirely. This started as a PM and I wish it had stayed that way to be honest.

No rage from me.

Beezlebrush,

thanks for taking the time to post up further pics of your work, particularly the areas I had pointed out. These close ups do indeed show to me that that is their natural, unedited state, showing NO signs of editing.

If I have put you in the poo with your online comp because of my comments, I do apologise, my comments were made with the seeking of the truth in mind, not to besmirch someones reputation.

As I stated in my earlier post:

I do like the vast majority of the work you have posted in your gallery however, this piece of yours still look UNNATURAL in most areas other than the ground.

Now, as I can see there has been no editing involved, am I still allowed to have my opinion in saying I don\'t like it? lol

As I also mentioned before, whether it is or isn\'t, to me is besides the point - the end result is the same. Now to YOU, it obviously would be a point, as you have something riding on it - the result of a competition. To that end - judges, if you are reading this thread;

Please disregard the innuendo and negativity created at the start of the thread - in fact just try ignoring the thread! :) If, as a judge, my opinion to you is actually worth being influenced by - allow me to say it shouldn\'t be, then just read the start of this particular post again.

Beezlebrush, good luck with your comp. You don\'t need my help (or otherwise) to win it, but thicker skin may also help you ride the stormy seeas of public opinion for future entries online.

cheers

Okay wereweevil, no problem....

As I said, I have no problem with you not liking this mini at all.... like most things, if it doesn\'t appeal, it doesn\'t appeal. There\'s plenty of stuff on here I don\'t like too. As you said, the world would be a boring place if we all agreed and had the same tastes.

Problems arise when you start bandying around the dreaded PS accusation. In these parts, it usually means a lynching lol

I was just keen to prove otherwise for obvious reasons.

No hard feelings on my part.

Incidentally, this mini was from the last round. There\'s not much at stake (apart from bragging rights) - the IP is a fun competition. You should try it.
