Making black shiny...but not too shiny

I guess the look I\'m going for is similair to the GW heavy metal teams Archaon and Champion of Slaanesh paintjobs where the main color is a shiny black that goes that goes to a red right at the edges. I suppose my specific question would be how to achieve that effect where the shine is noticable but not overwhelming, kind of vague I know but any advice would be most appreciated.

There are a couple of options here:

Try adding Black ink to the paint (50 /50 ratio)
or
Try mixing clear varnish to the Black paint.

Ack, just watch out for metallic flakes in your inks. I used to use a lot of ink on metallics straight out of the pot and transferred metallic flakes into the ink. And when I mixed some of this diseased ink into paint it slowly turn pearlescent :mad:
