making grass on 6mm (epic scale) minis

Hola! Perhaps you all might give me some ideas.

(have a look: http://www.coolminiornot.com/67681 )

ZaPhOd commented on my minis that on occassion, grass looks a bit out of scale. So, anybody have good suggestions on what to use as tall grass on small scale minis? My current method is just static grass.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Well two things really the first thing you could do is to make the static grass shorter by cutting it in half. You can either do it strand by strand or you can do it in bunches. This would be quicker. Time consuming I know but the result would be worth it. Or you could get the scissors to the models you have already and give them a trim. Sort of like mowing the lawn.
lollol

Or you could do what finn said and not worry about it at all. I know they are eldar but even they dont not fight unless the lawn is finely manicured...........

\"What is it Pike?\"
\"Its the Eldar sir. They say they wont fight.\"
\"Wont fight? What do you mean they wont fight? They\'ve surrendered already? Praise the Emperor! Go give them the conditions\"
\"No sir not surrendered. They\'ve got conditions of their own sir.\"
\"They want OUR surrender!? How dare they!\"
\"Not our surrender sir. They....ermm..they want the grass cut sir.\"
\"What?\"
\"They say its too long for skipping through. Their farseers robes are getting tangled up that sort of thing. Can\'t fight properly.\"
\"Give them a blast from the west batteries that\'ll keep the grass down!\"
\"Quite right sir, but not actully quite what they were after.\"
\"I\'m not bloody mowing it if thats what you mean!\"
\"Ah. Funny you should mention mowing sir.\"
\"You what!\"
\"They were wondering if they could get it with that stripy effect you see in the magazines. And possibly some kind of border.\"
\"Blearg!\"
\"Nothing fancy mind just some annuals and few bedding plants. Something yellow would go down well.\"
\"Glurb!\"
\"Perhaps a cup of tea sir?\" Said Pike.
\"Oh and that reminds me they\'d like to stop at 4 this afternoon for a cup of tea and scones and then get back to it at 4 30. Wondered if you\'d like to join them. \"

:D

G-nome, LOL!

lol

Anyhow, I\'ll probably try mowing it anyways, just to see whether it works or not. In any case that\'ll be an another brilliant example why miniature painters are just plain mad, raving lunatics. Mowing miniature grass, no one in his/her right mind would...

You going to use a push mower or a flymo type of thing? I think you\'ll have trouble getting a ride on mower through the gaps.:D

The grass looks fine. They just look like they\'re walking through wild grass. Joking aside, they wouldnt look right on a mowed lawn would they? Astro-terf? I dont think so anyway.

Great job, especially on that scale.

i admit...

I read Finn\'s comments before looking at the pics, and I was all ready to defend Zaphod\'s position...

Then I saw the pics.

I agree with Finn. ;)

Leave those well enough alone! The grass looks great!

Oh yeah! I have no problems with any of it at all! Just that I had the same issue when I tried my warmaster guys... No grass for me, and I didn\'t have any alternative...

That fine railroad flock stuff may work nice though :D

Finn... :moon:

When hunting, I have often waded through chest high grass. Almost stepped on a bobcat one morning - freightened both of us severly - just glad he went north while I was south.

ZaPhOD: Railroad flock stuff? What\'s that? Something I should seriously look at? :)

No, honestly. Dunno what it looks like.

It is generally shorter/finer than the GW static grass. Spread glue and lay on the flock for grass areas in HO/N scale. Try any model railroad supply store.

What kind of hunting do they do in Florida?

Here in Iowa, we have mainly pheasant, squirrel, turkey, deer and water fowl....just curious.

I\'ve seen grass that tall at a hobby shop. I think it was Woodland Scenics. It would be at least waist high, if not higher, on a 28mm.

here is some more info on them...

http://www.woodlandscenics.com/

They really make great products, and although everything is \'aimed\' towards model railroaders , it is easily adaptable towards \'our kind\'...

The \"field grass\" product may be what Barkel is talking about..(under landscaping, ground cover, field grass)

I have some of it, it would work great for \'tall waist high\' grasses.

It is a little difficult to work with at first.

I used some on my \'swamp minotaur\' (along with some brush bristles)

OK, just to drag this slightly off topic. I saw a mini posted here with a cat-tail. Was that a self sculpt or does woodland scenics make something like that?

Teeny-weeny grass

Unless you\'re talking elephant grass, grass a 6mm scale is basically not there. 1 tenth of 1mm. What I have done in the past with good results is to LIGHTLY wet the surface with water. Then take a salt shaker with plaster of paris in it and from about 1-2 feet up sprinkle it on the surface till you get a nice bumpy texture. Then, when it\'s dry, paint with a dark green and dry brush with a light green. Good luck.
