Making thicker bases?

If you look at Todd Swanson's Golden Demon winning Mortio Gulgor in the link below, I was wondering how you go about building the base up in the back like this. For a small model, I could see just putting a blob of Green Stuff or Milliput on the base and shape it with a file, but how would you go about doing this on a square base, or something like a monster base?

I'm working on Dark Elf Black Dragon and Dreadlord and I wanted to bring the scene up higher. I have considered using a block of wood cut to the exact dimensions of the base size and just using that, but I thought I'd ask on here.

I've also thought maybe gluing some plasticard along the sides and filling the cracks.

Here's the link to what I am talking about:

Just wondering how you guys go about doing this.

Ig I had to do something like that, I would look for some hollow object with the shape and dimensions I need.
In the case you are talking about, a plastic bottle cap should do it.
Then cut out the portion you don't want, with scissors or a saw. A half or less. Fill the cavity with any basing stuff, and done!

For something bigger, both the block of wood and the plasticard box seem good ideas.

I guess it depends on a few things, how high, how heavy the model is, etc. For higher and heavier models I think most of the ideas already mentioned would work well. Could also try PVC pipes, plastic boxes, etc. For lighter models, troops, infantry, typical 25-30mm figs, rigid foam, foam core, cardboard, just about anything could work. I've used washers a couple times but they're only a couple millimeters thick.

Yeah I'm working on a wooden base right now. This is going to be for a Golden Demon entry, so I need to make SURE it's up to standards.
