Making water bases

Hi Guys,

I want to make a base with water on it... Similar to THIS... But how do you hold the liquid in place till it\'s set... What do i make a mold from etc??

I haven\'t done water bases yet but I should think plasticine or blue tack would hold it until it sets. Practice with a spare base.

I have made a \'damn\' out of asitate (sp?) sheet, the stuff used in OHP\'s and in photocopiers. It does not stick to the epoxy gel once set, so you can peel it off (after 48hrs, any sooner it starts to sag). You will need to brace it with card/wood (anything stiff) and elastic bands because the sheet will bulge too under the weight of \'water\'.

Either that or you can build a former out of a handy container and cover it with Vasoline.

Clear setting epoxy gel is fairly user friendly but it will find any hole and pour through it!

very nice article fella, although i do want my old tooth brush back!

just a quick q though, how slowly are u mixing the resin? are u just stirring it or are more so letting it sit? plus how time are u using to mix the resin? i did my first resin bases for GD, they didnt turn out too well, far too many bubbles

also, the texture paste, are u just applying it straight on or are u coming back to it after application so ur not gettin unnatrual shapes?

mixing slow and letting settle is the best way.. bubbles can be a bitch so avoid getting them in in te first place they will occur however but its a case of sitting thre and sing a pin to pull the buggers out... most work their way to the thesurface in the initial time after the pour.

the texture paste is applied thiny in two layers.. The first acting as the main seal and the second as a filler.

AMAZING !! thanks guys just what i was after... Its even better as i have the soild water product to use... I\'ve had it for over a year but been to scared to use it in case i ruined the models.

So i you tutorial you say to paint PVA glue to seal the base... How far up the plastic card do i need to paint glue up to?

just the joint - paint glue into it to keep the joint sealed (think caulk). if you have a gap, the resin will seep out - making a mess that you do not want to have to deal with. (ask me how much it costs to have a table refinished....)
