Excellent! Glad you\'re getting these up.

Really really nice, didn\'t get a good look in the cabinet, but seen the close ups on your camera.

Will be sending you a PM.

Cheers! :) I might post my ogre entry later, but I\'m not entirely sure I\'m finished with it atm.

Ah, so that one was yours. It\'s a really well painted miniature and was probably one of the top ten for me in a very, very tough LoTR category. The work on the model is very smooth, detailed and realistic, and the lighting effect is totally convincing.

I like the subtlety of the colour palette and the soft, muted scheme and style. The freehand is also very good but suitably subtle.

If anything I think the base rather lets the model down. It\'s not that the painting on it is bad either, it just seems to me that the actual construction is a little sloppy. It doesn\'t look like you put enough time and planning into it. There are rough edges in various places and the lip on the edge of the step just screams plasticard to me.

It\'s not to the level of the mini and to be honest I think if you are going to go with something more scenic like this to mount your single mini on, it should be a little more interesting than a blank wall of bricks. Perhaps you were trying to keep it simple to emphasise the model, but if that\'s the case I think the wall behind was the wrong way to go and you should have done some less oppressive vertical detail.

i only got chance to have a quick look at the lotr section and i thought it looked like the toughest category there this year.

sweet work mate. :)

I love this, and agree, that LOTR was indeed a tough category.

I also agree with Lono regarding the base however. Its very well done, but overtowers the model. Maybe a broken wall may have looked better.

Still, fantastic stuff, a 9 from me.

Hm.. cheers for the pointers on the base. I was actually thinking of switching as I wasn\'t sure that the cellartype style I was going for worked for this miniature. My thought was one lonely window giving a light that lighted him. However the line is not plasticard it\'s sculpted :) But I notice now that forgot to do the vertical lines, crap :p. I wanted it rough though as it wasn\'t a hall style but cellar style, but the actual construction was a bit rushed maybe, especially in the way I attached the base. Or hm.. maybe more then rushed I wasn\'t entirely sure how to construct it to be easy to remove so I had to redo it. Will definately plan it much better in the future. I think the lack of finish on some places of the base might as you say let the overall picture down.

hm.. but outtowers I\'m not sure I was more thinking of a frame for the mini. Maybe it doesn\'t work as a such? \"Oppressive vertical details\".. not sure what that means actually. Do you mean that the stair as a vertical line for example takes too much attention? Or do you mean the wall takes too much attention? or both? :p

Anyways cheers for the feedback! :)

I guess what I mean is that whilst adding some vertical elements to the base can act as a good compositional device this is just too much. The pillar and pool on the gold winning entry by Julien has height added to the base through the column and mirror, but it doesn\'t overpower the scene, because it is slightly offset and takes account of the rule of thirds.

The wall behind your model is too solid a block and the lack of offset makes it a far too strongly defined frame to the composition for me.

Does that make any sense? I\'m not sure!

Mhm. Rule of thirds. I haven\'t thought about that. I was more thinking of a frame as said, and didn\'t include the wall in the composition but rather as a marker of the outer regions of the compositions. Which I guess has been a mistake as the miniature will be viewed as a whole.

Now I\'m thinking what to do about this. I have had a number of suggestions. I can remove the wall, or I can add more details to the base overall. Like slightly off-coloured tiles and more detailpainting. Maybe a lizard? :) I can make a window or such on the wall to make it look less solid. What would be an offset, you think?

hm. Well you got me thinking and I\'m really happy for that. :D Cheers, mate!

Glad to have caused you some new things to consider on a model you probably thought was done! To tell the truth you could leave it as it is and it would still be all good, but changes... hmm...

It\'s a tough one to be honest. I don\'t think a window would work because the light sourcing could clash with that already on the mini. My initial instincts say that a good start would be to reconsider the base from the start and do a few dry runs with different compositional elements behind. He seems to be pointing off with his left hand, possibly directing folks? Don\'t know what interpretation you took on the pose, but you could maybe work that into a narrative.

hehe yeah I remember now that\'s why I ruled out an opening in the first place.

However... I might change the base for Ravage mix open. I think I have gotten some nice inspiration here. So cheers for all comments, Might upload my ogre soon as well just to get some feedback before deciding if it\'s finished or not! :)

What do you think?

Have to agree. This base really brings out the fine paint job and takes it to a new level I think. Are you happier with it?
