Mantic/Kings of War

I'm just getting back into modelling, so very short of models to paint. At the moment, I'm more interested in getting minis that are interesting to paint than following any particular faction or manufacturer (currently I've turned to GW through familiarity). My painting skills are pretty weak at the moment, so I'm more interested in practicing on rank and file than doing a disservice to characters.

Online I keep seeing the Mantic range, but have never seen them featured here. Is the miniature quality and variation significantly poorer than other manufacturers? I'm particularly interested in Kings of war, as you seem to get a ridiculous amount for your money.

If they aren't great, are there any recommendations for how to cost effectively get a load of random minis for practice?

In answer to your questions;

I'm not a fan of mantic's style of sculpts, but that shouldn't put you off, the quality of the couple I have is Good, equal to GW's.

Now as to how to get practise Miniatures, especially a random selection, eBay is as good a starting point as any. A few (ok a lot of) years ago I picked up a mixed bag of D&D Miniatures for a few pounds, you might be able to do the same.

Thanks Dragonsreach, I guess I shall try with a small purchase to see if I like the style. I've been trawling through eBay, and everything seems to be sold as painted units at similar or above new cost - guess I'll keep searching for a gem though if people have had success here in the past
