manual drill

I also use a battery operated Dremel

The battery operated Dremel is great. It has two speeds and I feel it is very safe, but I have been around real power tools my whole life so maybe that\'s why. :bouncy:

I\'ve only drilled a hole in my finger once with my dremel. The secret is to operate it at medium speed and hold it AND the mini tight. That magical machine has saved me countless hours of hand-drilling, and I do love it ever so. But I did spend many years using a homemade pin vise (made with green stuff and a screwdriver), so I\'m very sick of hand-drilling.
You can always use a table vise to hold your mini while drilling if you\'re scared. They do make hobby vises which are rubber-coated to save damage to the sculpt.

Not sure, but from my extensive watching of TV over summer vacation I discovered they invented the game \"Yu-Gi-Oh\":D:D

Well, I LIKE the GW drill...

As I do commission paintjobs, I really need that thingy... A customer once sent me a unit of Knights, with the tails of the horses all broken off... and there\'s no way in HELL you could just safely glue them back on... time for \"pin the tail on the warhorse\"!
I also use a kind of cheap dremel fake... it\'s fun to work with, especially with that long bendy expansion piece, which is not that heavy and really workable. However, the best use I found for it yet, was to use one of the circular brass brushes to strip metal minis of paintjobs gone awry... it may take a bit longer than soaking them in some liquid, but it really gets too all crevices... just cleaned a commission Skeleton Giant that way... looks better than new...
Pinning and drilling minis works too, but still, for REALLY small holes in metal minis, I still use the hand drill... most hair-thin drills wont stand the tension when used in a dremel... my humble experience...

either insane or very tough!

Eparchos: You are either insane or you have no nerves in your hands. You wrote:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaagggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
How many times must you drill a hole in your finger before it occurs to you that it hurts. And you said, \"...only once with my dremel.\" Have you drilled holes in your fingers with other devices? Are you, by any chance, a former marine? Do you use a lot of band-aids? When you think of a romantic evening, is there a lot of leather involved?:D

Seriously, I still use my dremel, and it is of the 2 speed, battery operated variety. But if there is a safer way, even if it takes much longer, I will do it that way.

ps. Once upon a time I was playing an old game called Tip-It. It was a game where you balanced Mr. Tip-It and the one who knocked him down lost. Back in the days before parents thought of safety they made Mr. Tip-It out of metal. My sister and I would argue over who got to put Mr. Tip-It back on his perch. One time we got in a tug of war match with Mr. Tip-It. I remember losing my grip, but for some reason my sister still backed away as though she lost. I looked down to see a perfectly normal thumb with a metal Mr Tip-It arm going in one side and out the other. Funny how it didn\'t hurt. But the Tetnis shot hurt.

Atlanta Vs. Paris

You really ought to try some of the major European cities, that weren\'t destroyed during the war. I mean seriously, here we are with a million cars trying to use a road network that was built with the odd horse in mind....Well OK, mebbe a group of horses, but you get my point:D

As an American who as driven (and/or been driven) through Atlanta and several European cities, I\'d vote the great metropoli of Europe as a bigger cluge, hands-down.

That thing in European Vacation where they are trapped driving around the Arc de Triuphe? They aren\'t kidding.

Customs aren\'t necesarilly in keeping with modern conveyances, either.

I\'ve also driven cobblestone Spanish streets after Semana Santa when the streets are coated with wax. Thank God it\'s the dry season; I\'d hate to drive that stuff wet. But it is down-right scary to have your tires squeaking when you are on a narrow, twisting, nearly 45 degree street.

In Atlanta, you just have a rush hour that never ends, and drivers that can be doing from 45 to 75 without regard to each other. Since it is a major hub, a good portion of the people driving there have no experience with local oddities. But I\'d take it over March/April in a place like Rota, Spain, any day.

Dremel vs. Pin Vise

Dremel, Yeah! :D Pin vise, boo! :|~

I got a pin vise before I got my dremel. I busted half the bits in the set withing 30 minutes.

Then I got the two-speed cordless dremel (it\'s the cheapest one they have). I love it. I\'ve only busted one bit in the several months I\'ve had it. The only time I\'ve used a pin vise is if I\'m drilling something really small, like an arm or something.

I also have a set of very small drill bits. The largest in the set is still smaller than the smallest dremel bit. The work really great, even in the dremel.

I\'ve heard that you can now get the two smallest bit sizes for a dremel in four packs. I have to get those! :D

I also have little grinding stones that I use to clean my minis, cutters for carving out wooden bases, and a sanding wheel that I use to smooth metal bases. Godlikebuthumble\'s post reminded me - I have a little brass brush that I use for removing paint.

My dremel and its parts are some of the best tools I\'ve bought for modeling.

One anoying fact: Everyone will tell you to use paperclips as pins. The wire in paperclips does not match ANY drill bit that came with my pin vise. :flame:

My dream is to get the flexi-cable dremel with a foot pedal control. Ah, drilling control heaven!

7,sometimes 8 lanes!!! The biggest, motorways in Britain only have three lanes and it is an old tradition that, at any one time, at least one of them is being dug uplol

??? First, why do you say \"a lot of leather involved\" like it\'s a bad thing:D

Secondly... Mr. Tip-It:eek: Aaaah, the nostalgia of it. I didn\'t think there was anyone else that remembered that game. Back when no one gave a s#@t what you gave a kid to play with :) Why, I remember when Mousetrap used to be RatTrap and came with live rats and you had to catch them either in the pointy, steeljawed trap or skewer them on your Bowie knife. Ahhhh, the good old days :D

Anyways, back on topic. I personally find both pin vises and Dremmels to be wonderful tools. However, I prefer the pin vise for drilling and the dremmel for cutting, grinding, sanding, shaping, etc.

As for safety? WEll, speaking as one who dropped a xacto knife through his hand while putting the safety cap back on and once walked face firt into a fork lift, no matter how simple or complicated a tool is, some clutz can find a way to make it lethallol

A small note on the ancient egyptian condom: they were lubricated intestines of animals. You might want to reconsider regression... Still it was better than the previous contraceptive made of crocodile excrement. A brief history of condoms

I can see how that would work...

If I told my partner I was applying crocodile excrement to my tackle I suspect a sh*g would be totally out of the question:D

Remember Jarts? Lawn Darts? When I was about five or so, my sister chucked one up in the air and it somehow missed the target and stuck into the top of my skull. They don\'t sell Jarts anymore...I wonder why that is?

Or worse - I kicked up a bit of lead into my eye ... was certain I was going blind... flushed with water good - to the point a stared into an upside down tumbler filled with water - heh ... that seemed to do the trick but I wear my glasses now when I use that blasted thing - and then I only use it on sturdy things - not delicate bits anymore .... too scary ...

Ahh yes, Dremel injuries. I was working on a Christmas present for a buddy of mine, which involved grinding a Mexican 5 Peso piece smooth. During the process I burnt the caca out of myself a couple of times - including when the piece flipped out of my hand and landed on my thigh, causing me to say \"Oh My\" or words to that effect. lol
