Manufacturer Recommendations Please

Hi guys.

I live in South Africa and we have very few shops that keep miniatures. Those that do generally stock Warhammer and 40k. The only one in my area to stock Malifaux and Hordes (very limited range) has recently closed while they look for new premises.

So I'm looking to possibly import some figures. The exchange rate is quite shocking for our currency, so before I spend any money I'd like to make sure I'm getting good quality miniatures.

This is where I hope you folks will come in. I am new to painting, but enjoy fantasy and steampunk figures that have "personality". I'm not limiting things to those genres, but the mini having some character is important to me. Can you guys recommend any miniature manufacturers so I can know I'm spending my money on quality?

Thanks for the help!

Are you looking for painting or gaming purposes?

1: Painting wise look at the Coolminiornot store and see what you fancy.
2: Game Wise see point No 1.

but recent purchases by me solely for painting purposes, Guildball, Mierce miniatures and Warzone Resurrection.

I'm currently working on a Meirce Minatures piece.
It's resin and a beautiful fault free cast, makes Finecast look like floor sweepings.
The Warzone Resurrection figure I have primed, also resin is again a perfect cast, but my favourite figures are really Freebooters. Sculpted by Werner Klocke and with so much character.

Thanks Dragonsreach - always great to hear what people are working on and what is good quality. As a newbie to this fantastic hobby it can be a bit daunting to find and choose minis.

Well this place is a hive of useful(?) information.

One of the things about this site is our willingness to help out other painters, we do Mini Exchanges, do postal drops for those who have difficulty getting mini's in their locale, and generally have fun.

Look in the Works in Progress forum for lots of inspiration, learning and suggestions. ( Not to mention sarcasm and rip-taking)

I've had a browse through the forums and articles - some fun stuff going on. I'm looking forward to getting to be a part of a community - only myself and a friend in the area who are keen on the painting side. And hoping to improve our skills.

Dragonsreach: Are you primarily a painter or a gamer? What brushes and paints do you enjoy using?

Primarily a painter these days, still game occasionally but not as much as I used to.

Paints.... Mostly Vallejo Model Colours and Airbrush Colours one or two GW, a few Reaper and a few tubes of Liquitex Acrylics.
Brushes...Winsor and Netwon Series 7's, Da Vinci 8404 (2/0){wonderful brush} and a couple of Isabey 62275 which I've recently discovered. Longer hair than the series 7's and great for doing freehand.

Rrecently picked up a couple of CASSART sable watercolour brushes, not bad quality for the price, good point, good belly, decent flex and a good budget price alternative to W&N's.

Best way to help your skills out is to show us in the work in progress forum bit. We are always willing to lend a hand and we even have friendly contests where the main prize is bragging rights ^_^
