Marketers

Next time I get one I\'m going to pretend to listen for a few minutes, then scream at the top of my lungs then slam the phone down

It should be illegal....

I used to work nights and never got any decent sleep because of telemarketeers. I couldn\'t switch off/unplug my phone because my wife was seriously ill in hospital and I had to be ready to respond if the worst happened. I have probably given a few of them nervous breakdowns....:innocent:

NOBODY should be allowed to \'cold call\' either on the phone or knocking on the door, it\'s a gross invasion of privacy IMO.

Got to agree with the Finn here -

I used to work nights as well, and on morning in a 3 hour span got 10 calls from the local newspaper trying to sell me their service - after I told them I wasnt interested the first 5 times I started working my way up the food chain with management at the call center - I finally told the call center manager (or at least thats who they said he was) that if they called me one more time I was going to call the State Attorney Generals office (in Texas they have a hotline for just such abuse) and have em pull my phone records - at that point they quit calling.

Yes, I have worked on the phones in the past and know that the person on the other end is human - but still once you tell a telemarketer no they should leave you alone.

I paint my thumb.
I do mess with them a bit when I\'m in a playful mood ( Which is... not that often.)
I remember a few good pun that came when talking with telemarketers...

The \'Journal de Montreal\' called me and amongst the arguments used, the lady said:
\"There is also the (financial supplement) \'Your money\' that is very interesting...\"
\" Sooo, you think my money is interesting, Oh, I get it now.\"
lol

How do we all feel about \"Chuggers\" - charity muggers, those people who stop you on the street to \"ask a few questions\" then try to get you to sign up to make regular donations by playing on your guilt/good nature? They usually wear hi-vis jackets and carry clipboards but we occasionally get them wearing superhero outfits (those crazy guys  )

It\'s got to the point where any lunchtime when I get to go in to town there\'s always at least five of them trying to accost people who obviously don\'t have the time or desire to stop. I\'m in no way against charities and support several on an ongoing basis but this approach does tend to give them a negative reputation. At least that\'s the general feeling round here.

well i hate telemarketers and i used to be a telemarketing manager.
Was for a very large double glazing firm.
I started on the phones in 1999 and after climbing the ladder for a while i left and returned a couple of years ago and the thing that struck me was the change. When i started there were not many companies cold calling and most people were polite and the canvassers had a personality (usually). now adays there are hundreds of companies calling and everyone (including me) is sick of it. I couldnt do the job any more on the phone and it is a hard job to do.
Be warned one safe haven used to be ex-directory but i know for a fact that my company obtained those numbers and others are following suit.
Just tps the beggers!! (usually works though npt always!!)

So personally? No problem with the people, have to make a living somehow, but depise the practice and I\'ll not be nice about it. What worries me if a sensible, intelligent, if a little too polite and a bit unwise in the ways of the world, young man call fall for these, what the hell is happening with old people living alone, or those without the sense they were born with?

should I add a [/rant]? ;)

This is a major problem. I know of several examples of elderly being preyed upon by aggressive phone/mail/door-to-door marketing. One elderly forgetful woman was sold 10 expensive pianos by the same salesman over the course of a year to the tune of $250,000. This is despite the family contacting the salesman to tell him about the woman\'s problem and begging him not to take advantage of her. Another elderly woman\'s life savings disappeared over a period of about 6 months. When the family investigated, they found that there was approximately $20,000 a month going out to numerous charities. The more she gave, the more solicitations came in the mail/by phone.

Take home message - stay involved with your elderly family members!

With the sole exception of those Fathers For Justice tosspots (they should have shot they guy who broke into Buckinham Palace) I dont mind Charity People. However up the town centre theres these 2 Mormon guys (yes, Mormons in merry old England!) who leap on everyone. A Muslim Imam can walk past in full robes and whatnot and they\'ll still go \"Hello there Brother, have you head of the book of Mormon?\" NO! I DONT WANT TO JOIN YOUR CRAZY CULT! Everyone knows Jesus is English...

My opinion of telemarketing reached an all time low in the weeks after my mother had a stroke. We were inundated with calls from people who would say things like \"Is Millie there?\" If you asked, they\'d say, \"This is Dave.\" ...exactly sounding as much as possible like old friends calling to express their condolences, and when some got through I could see mom\'s face scrunching up as she\'d get confused. If I could have actually reached some of those bastards I\'d still be in prison.

I think about this from time to time now that I am trying to sell things myself. Before, the question was just how do I feel about the salesman; now it includes questions about what I am and am not willing to do to sell stuff. If I ever sink that low, I hope someone has the good sense to shoot me.

The same thing was happening both around where I live and where I work. It was getting so bad in Birkenhead that the police had to intervene and tell them to \"Go Away\" as they were becoming a flaming nuisance.

We have had several copycat \"Chugger\" girls around Bolton lately. They pretend to be from a charity and stick a Clipboard in your face then pretend to be Deaf and expect a \"Donation\".
Doesn\'t work on me as I can Sign a little and Fingerspell quite effectively.

Turns out these young women not English and are exploiting peoples embarrasment at being unable to communicate to anyone Deaf.

As a warning (in the UK) do not give any cash to people \"Collecting for Charity\" unless they can produce a licence on demand.

One can only presume the answer would be \"yes, I\'ve heard of it...\" Seriously, Mormons out proselytizing are probably not the worst offenders - at least they\'re always polite. Not that I\'d want to listen to their spiel for more than a minute, of course.
Everyone knows Jesus is English...
Canadian, actually. Anyone can walk on water here between January and March.

There was a brief period of time that I would tell telemarketers who asked for me that \'I\'m sorry he has passed away\'...

But then someone who was actually calling for me (not selling something) ended up very confused.....and I had much explaining to do.
