What do you think about Martial Arts? Does anybody around here even practise Martial Arts like Kung Fu, Budo, Ninjutsu, Thai Boxing...?

So this thread is yours, hijack it, abandon it, laugh at it, but please know I\'m really interested in this and didn\'t start it because I was bored.

used to do judo. waaaaaay back. didn\'t enjoy it. found the holds etc too claustrophobic. also you tend to get dislocation injuries in judo which scare the hell out of me. much rather break something

I practiced ninjutsu when I was younger. I loved it, but I stopped when we got a new teacher who, on his first class as teacher, hit me so hard on my neck that I collapsed and nearly lost consciousness. I didn\'t dare continue with him as teacher and I never got around to pick it up again.

Its funny you brought this up...I just enrolled my youngest daughter into Karate, and she had her first class last night.

I did Judo many moons ago. I was never really any good at it, but it was fun and quite a thrill to send somebody flying over your shoulder with a cool throw. I agree with Mr. Inacage about grappling thing. Judo\'s real strength is the choke holds and joint breaking possibilities...Not fun if you like to breath and move your elbows... lol

I did Judo for a while and I still can do most of the attacks, especially those that look good :D I also did Aikido... it was very interesting to learn how to actually hurl someone around with no real need for power.
At the moment I do Kendo. I like it a lot, eventhough I am often told that I hit too hard :D
In the privacy of my home, I do Ninjitsu, but only the breathing techniques and those that don\'t actually require a partner. Stretching exercises and stuff like that.

Welll, Pityoman is actually THE MAN around here for Marital Arts, he is into some pretty serious stuff!

That said, both of my children are one belt away from black in Tae Kwon Do. My second job is to manage the TKD School that they attend. Both of my kids teach lower belt classes. So yea I would say that 3-4 days a week, 1-2 hours a day during the school year and 2-4 hours a day in the summer, yuppers we are pretty heavy into it.
They keep trying to get me out on the mats, if I could ever get out of my office, I would love to great way to loose my 120 extra pounds!:(

Wow... so many people that have practiced ninjitsu. You folks should know where my signiture has come from then ;).

I started with Kenpo but moved on to ninjitsu due to the freedom it brings rather than strict kata and tournement fighting. Plus i couldn\'t dedicate my time to both. :(

I\'ve also practiced nunchuka-do and i attend Torite jutsu classes when Tom Muncy visits my friends dojo...about twice a year. All you from the U.S. should know of the dragon society i think. ;)

I still got a belly though :) I love my food too much. :)

yep ur sign motto is pretty common in all the world now because the founding japanese motto... i love japan culture and language... i studied it for 3 years but now most of kanji i learned are vanished away...

however.. i like kata figures cuz they are so cerimonial.... as the shooting in kyujutsu...

I used to do Tae Kwon Do and some Jujitsu before my health got too bad. Both were loads of fun.

I prefer the Crouching tiger, flying bullshit style myself. Nothing beats Hollywood Kata... running on trees, along walls, stopping and fighting in mid-air... good stuff. The real stuff just doesn\'t compare.

Oh... and when I was MUCH younger, I could use nunchuku so fast you couldn\'t see them, and put a throwing star through a tomato from thirty yards... not too shabby without ANY formal training. :D

Course... I got arressted for the nunchuks eventually... possession of a deadly weapon in the fifth degree... NEVER invite a cop to search your vehicle... grumble... grumble...

Tony: I like to watch Kata and watching kyujutsu when they are on horseback...or is that a different art?

I feel kata is important in order to keep tradition but the thing about kata in my view is the true meanings behind them. Too much is hidden which in turn, misleads some martial artists.
Ask anyone in Karate if they really think a block would actually work if applied as a block and not as a strike/break/throw (which is what i believe most of the blocks really are). These things aren\'t really mentioned in a karate dojo unless they study the break down of Kata. Please feel free to tell me if anyone thinks I\'m wrong as this is my view only. :)

I fenced in college. Not oriental but technically a martial art.

I also did sword and shield armored combat with the SCA and hope to get into that again if I ever get free time and cash to get the bits of armor I still lack.

I also used to do a little IckyThump.

kyudo is the foot bow shooting. not on horseback ^^

i love kata because i always loved the \"rite\" of the various position, and the meaning behind them.... the sad thing IMHO is many people do martial arts just because it\'s vogue :(

I had a Vietnamese friend in college who had learned from his father but decided to take a Tai Kwan Do class. He quit when he got tired of the teacher asking him to show him how to do stuff.

Then there\'s my sister\'s famous threat: \"Back off, I know Tai Bo!\"

Anyone had any injuries? Mine have been a sub-lucted shoulder (i think thats what they call it) when i landed on my head and shoulder and some busted toes when i thought it would be a good idea to kick my sparring partners elbow..ouch. Been lucky really. :)

I do Karate and took up a pair of swords as my weapon of choice. I was pretty good at it. The first time I actually had to use my training it all went out the window and I used the most common form of martial arts Sand shoe tie. I beat that guy by at least 30 meters.

I\'ve done roughly 2 years of indy pro wrestling (not really a martial art but I makes you a tough bastard) a little over one year of mixed martial arts (UFC style) and a little over a year of pure Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (grappling). My personal dream is to have one professional fight before I\'m too old to do it. Not likely to happen but you never know.

I am the master of the Steel Toe Boot.
I also know quite a few nerve pinches that will put a much bigger man on the ground crying like a little girl.

Heres one:
Take your index finger.
Place it so that your second knuckle is right under your nose and push up.
Painful right?
Now imagine some one has hold of the back of your head and has their hand there.
