I\'ve used regular old masking tape a number of times and honestly never had any problems. I usually use a combination of masking tape and newspaper to mask off large areas. I\'ve also tried painter\'s masking tape, but it just isn\'t tacky enough, plus the adhesive has the tendency to come off on the model.
If you do use masking tape, I would recommend that you let any painted surface dry for at least 24 hours to prevent damaging any surfaces. I\'ve done this with both GW and Vallejo paints.
Windsor and Newton masking fluid works as well. It comes off surprisingly easy by just rubbing your finger against the model\'s surface. Not sure what would happen if you left the masking fluid on for a long time though. Also, this might not be ideal for large surfaces.
