Just wondering, has anyone purchased this set?

If so, is the filming quality good? Does it have annoying DRM so you can only play it back on one device?

Generally - is it a good buy?

Filming quality is good imho, especially for the HD download. I haven't seen any drm or watermark, the files are simple m4v(mp4 video) files (no idea why they chose that instead of the normal mp4 container, should be irrelevant for most devices).

The whole feels more like a workshop and not a tutorial. That means they are talking to each other, chatting, commenting if they'd do something differently because they find it easier. Overall it's pretty relaxed atmosphere.
In the mean time they show the topic well enough. I think this one was the best from the 3 Dark Sword releases (Jen+Anne, Marike, Jessica). The other two(Marike, Jessica) are harder to follow/replicate (and also the way they paint isn't for me, I don't have the needed patience)

is it a good buy? Well it's not bad, but a bit pricey for $50. Between 30-40 it would be a great buy.
Then again the painting pyramid is $20/topic, so....

Thanks for that... it does seem expensive for a download.

I was wondering too if it's genuine / full HD (720p or 1080p) or if it's a rip of the DVD source.

it seemed genuine for me.
What I don't know (and can't check until I'm home) if it's half-hd (720p) or full (1080p).

edit: ooo, found a way to check (redownload a file from cmon-shop). sorry, but the Jen+Anne isn't HD at all I mixed it up with the other DS downloads.

Jen + Anne: simple DVD (720x416)
Jessica: fullHD (1920x1080)
Marike: fullHD (1920x1080)

(and if you look at the titles, they are correct. The Jen+Anne is labelled as download, the others as HD download)

--------

the only ones I didn't have is the Terrain Builder and the JamesWappel ones. I'd like to have the JW ones, but it's 50+ videos for $20 each. And I'm not ready to pay 1000$ for videos (but as a 'collector' buying only one or two isn't an option either)

to be honest I think it's better that way.
The HD is really wasted space when most of the painting videos are about "watching paint dry". (and with all the miniature mentor, cmon, GW, PrivateerPress, PaintingBuddha, usable YouTube, vids from other companies even downsampled and compressed (most HD to 720p, x264/x265) it's over 500GB atm)
The important part (movements, how the paint is applied, etc) is perfectly visible even in SD.

I'm sure they spend some time making paint wet before watching it dry :p

A fair point though, if it's still watchable and useful the resolution isn't so important... it's just a cheeky price for a download. Time for me to suck it up and pay the money I guess.

altough slightly offtopic:

Miniature Painting Secrets with Natalya : pro: painting is good and shows how she paints, con: no explanations when-why-what exactly, style is tedious, not for me
(I saw this one on torrent too, probably taken down by now, but sometimes a BAD version (240p) resurfaces on YouTube from time to time)

7 Day Army painter: pro: this way I think it's possible to make a living, nice to see how a studio works, con: aimed at airbrushed-ttq models(I saw this one on torrent too, probably taken down by now)

Miniature Painting Secrets with Jennifer Haley: love this one. pro: technique/method is shown in detail and explained too, text is nice I don't feel like she is talking from high, con: none for me, one of the few vids I can watch again and again (I saw this one on torrent too, probably taken down by now)

Terrain Painter: no idea, didn't get that one

Masterworks Miniature Painting With Jen Haley and Anne Foerster: another nice one. pro: technique/method is shown, friendly workshop feeling, con: sometimes they skip parts (like the NMM gold armor, they start, and don't really finish)

Masterworks Miniature Painting with Jessica Rich: pro: as always tech/method is shown, some explanations (less than on the Jen vid, much more than on the Natalya one), con: don't know somehow it didn't make an impression. I'm pretty sure I just FFwd-ed most of it (which is weird a bit as I like her painted versions of the DarkSword minis on their site)

Masterworks Miniature Painting with Marike Reimer: pro: : as always tech/method is shown, some explanations (less than on the Jen vid, much more than on the Natalya one), mentioning of Bob Ross :), con: her technique is slow for me and there is a lot of refining that takes a lot of time to be good, I really just bought it to see how the sheer fabrics + lace and freehand is made, the rest I didn't really watch

Wappel ones: don't really know, did't buy any, just looked at the 30min previews he has on YT. From that the tutorials themselves are great.

I just purchased and downloaded the Masterworks Miniature Painting With Jen Haley and Anne Foerster one. I'll take a while to assimilate the information and have fun trying it with my son. I will have a good look at the Jen Haley one in the future I think. Thanks for the advice.

Once nice aspect of this set you shouldn't overlook is the section on color theory. Other than the first JBT disc, not many of them go into detail on color theory and it can have a huge impact on your painting.
