Matney's WIP Thread (Obviously pic heavy)

I figure I might as well start a WIP thread to document my progress -- seems like everyone else is doing it. :p

A bit of history, if you're interested.. I started playing D&D in 1996 and immediately started painting my own miniatures. I did that pretty solidly until 1999 or so, then I discovered girls, and I returned to the hobby side of gaming (I never stopped rolling dice) in 2012.

The very first thing I painted when I came back was an older Reaper demon:

Followed by a Reaper dwarf:

And then I got into WH40K. A friend of mine decided he didn't want to paint his own army, so he paid me to assemble and paint a Dark Eldar army for him, which I remembered that I really liked drybrushing from when I did ceramics as a kid:

And finally, my wife got me Dark Vengeance for Christmas, so I started on my Dark Angels (I know the eyes are awful... they're a little better, now, but I recognize that eyes are an area I need to work on, even if all I'm doing is inking them in a single color):

And, thank you for your time. Hopefully by documenting my WIPs, I'll show improvement.
If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Hi! Great to see another new WIP thread. My favourite kind.

Are they bobbins from cotton reels the DE are on? That's a good idea, as I can't seem to drink enough wine to keep me in corks!

Yes, they are. I'm not a wine drinker, so I don't come into corks all that often. Hobby Lobby (Love 'em or hate 'em, they're the closest craft store to my house AND they carry Vallejo Model paints) has corks for ~$1 each, but they have a 20 pack of wooden thread spools for $3.99.

It's not obvious, but there are two different sizes of spools in that pic -- I bought a small pack of smaller ones to see if I'd really like having something to hold onto while I painted, and once I was sold they didn't have the smaller spools when I returned to Hobby Lobby. Now I prefer the bigger ones, anyway. :D

Goo didea with the cotton reel things (I think thats the technical term :p). Not being a drinker i have the same problem getting corks so this is something i'll be stealing to use myself so thanks for that :)
The Dark eldar are looking good. Always struck me as a nice army to paint

And now the most current stuff...

If you look at the last post, there are two titled "Skin-Practice." This is because I realized my flesh painting was seriously lacking, so I picked up some cheap busts and set to work practicing my fleshtones.

Most recently, I decided to start knocking out my Reaper Storm Giant, from the first Bones Kickstarter, and I opted to use more traditional painting styles (why are we reinventing the wheel when the Old Masters were painting beautiful, lush, fleshtones centuries ago?), starting with a verdaccio underpainting.

I figured out how to crop and resize Imgur pictures -- my life is totally changed!

I'm embarrassed to say I totally forgot how to do that.

However, I think I've become a better painter, at least. :D

Case in point -- WIP thread for my 1:4 Dwarf Bust:http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums...arf-bust-WIP-(Huge-images-I-m-really-sorry-(-)

And, since I got a Foldio for Christmas, I'm going to be taking pictures of things I've completed, over the years. Here's the first one with the Foldio: http://www.coolminiornot.com/407832
