Matt Varnish question.

Lo folks, I have a pondering...As the more astute of you may have garnered from the title.

When I came back from the US I had 2 cans of Testors Dulcote in my bergen, which were had by the sneaky TSA people (for what reasons I can't discern logically, but that argument is irrelevant right now and still has me fizzing). So I went for a walkabout to find a substitute.
Now, I know Millers in Glasgow had Krylon, which I was advised would do, but the bastards moved the store somewhere while I was away. Near closing time, I hoofed it to another art store where I found Windsor and Newton Matt varnish.

Has anyone ever used this stuff to coat minis with? If so, is it any good?

Millers has moved? Any idea where? A websearch still has them on Stockwell street.

Hmn, I went a merry wander down Argyle St, far as my reckoning goes it should be to the right as you're walking down. The Millers sign was gone, all I could see was the Argos. Could be I missed it completely! I did a bit of a recce to see what was what but no sign of it at all. Just ended up going to the art store on Queeen St.

I have used Windsor and Newton years ago , used to get it in Bradbury graphics in Belfast. Its what you make of it. Like all Windsor and Newton it is a good quality art product. I have just fallen in love with the Army Painter matt spay 'cos I cant get Vallejo matt or satin spray anymore. Check them out if you get a chance. Netmerchants are a great and quick mailorder source , I got mine in 48 hrs.

I flew in with deoderant in my bergen, Kev. They didn't bother taking that. As far as i'm aware an aerosol can poses no threat to an aircraft...I've no idea what the hell they're playing at or trying to prove by banning them from flights. Nothing sensical points to a valid reason.

100ml is the maximum amount of liquid you can carry in each container on board. This would be why it was confiscated. I suggest putting any liquids into your hold baggage.

tbh the problem in this case is probably the pressurised container

yeah he defo has some in firestorm. at least he did last time i went in. he's pretty good at ordering stuff too

It was in the hold baggage. A pressurised container isn't going to cook off in an aircraft hold. If I was a terrorist intent on blowing up a pressurised container in the hold, all i'd do is annoy a few passangers who recieve a bit of raggy baggage, probably not even that.No one would even notice until landing.

YES
If so, is it any good?
No! Yellows too damn quickly. 18 months after using looked like dilute mustard on the white sections.
Don't think its intended for our use.

Try Humbrol Matt Acrylic varnish spray, Acts just like Dullcoate, smells similar.
But Anonoceti's (however you spel lit) workshop supply Dullcoate (or did last time I checked).

Interestingly enough, I noticed it said something about it not yellowing on the can. You reckon they might have had complaints and changed formula since then?
I'll be checking out these other sites too, cheers for all the points in the right direction, chaps!

if you are happy to brush on. the best i have tried (better even than dull cote) is cryla matte. makes blacks look velvety.

I was going to post a thread asking about the Army Painter Matt Varnish, but hope it's ok to post here instead. I can see a recomendation for it earlier in this thread, has any one else tried it? It says it doesn't give the satin effect of other brands and doesn't yellow, just wondering how people have found using it.

Army Painter is really dull. But it seems to easily give a slightly rough surface or in worst case a "snow flake" finish. I'd say stay away or at least experiment on old minis before applying it to your newest and best work...
