Personally, I mostly use Liquitex Matt Varnish, brush on type.
Big bottle, ten bucks, lasts a long, long time.
I\'ll also grab Testor\'s Matt Varnish spray, whenever I can get hold of it.

Actually many of your top painters don\'t varnish their models for competitions, they try and choose paints that are truly matte in finish when painted. Varnishes or clear coats can alter the paint appearance underneath.

I don\'t varnish my competition pieces. They aren\'t gaming pieces so I\'m not worried about them being handled roughly. That is why mounting to a plinth is important because it allows you to handle the figure by the plinth and not by the figure it self.

Now before someone jumps my shit and says they have won a demon and they use dullcoat, I am just giving my opinion on the question.

Testors DulCoat if you can get it. Just a light dusting to help even the gloss/matt out.

I\'m the same as dragonforge, I don\'t bother varnishing them, not much point when I am not likely to touch them once finished.

Peace and love...

Yeah, I\'ve never varnished any of my pieces for display before, but one of my customers is looking for exquisite display quality miniatures to be used in the game of 40k. That can be asking a lot... a single drop on the tabletop and the paint job is sullied.

You should probably apply a few coats of gloss varnish before you do the matte layer, then. Goss varnish is tougher, according to received wisdom.

Granddad!
if he\'s gonna be gaming with it
gloss varnish first, it is harder yes, then a couple of light coats of matt

I do this as a matter of course on all my minis, they still have to be dusted/cleaned from time to time. The last thing I\'d want is to \"dust\" the paint off
Not withstanding the ham fisted admirer with those immortal words:
\"mind if I have a.... Ooops! Sorry...\"

FWIW*, I feel a final coat of varnish brings everything together, and adds depth

Blast the figure with a bit of Dullcote if you must (I hate varnish).

If people want to use display figs to game with, that\'s their lookout and they should be responsible for making them durable enough I reckon.
