Mentality?

Hello all,

It seems after 20 years I have fallen into the same old trap I always used to fall into, the trap of

\'Ok, lets get this army fully painted, but lets make a big effort to get it looking good for the tabletop\'

3 weeks later, one figure almost finished and a lot of unpainted mini\'s [beastmen and minotaurs in this case] staring back at me with accusing glances. I swear one of the beastmen actually pushed a minotaur off of the shelf yesterday as I walked past so that he could be closer to the front of the queue to be painted.

I have read the very informative articles posted on this site about speed painting your army, but I always seem to want to go that little bit extra to make the best job I can of everything I paint.

Does anyone else suffer from this sort of mentality or is it just me being a muppet?

Comments welcome.

Regards,

Mark.

I can\'t bear speed painting or that just good enough to look ok if I stand 6 feet away from the games table and squint standard. My past attempts at painting figures quickly have all ended badly. There\'s a certain knack to it that I just don\'t have. I need my several layers of highlights. I can\'t manage with just two or three!

Hmmmm...

looks at the half painted SOB on the shelf, next to them the half painted undead, above them the Orks, next to them the LaTD, then there\'s the Space Wolves and the big box of unpainted LOTR under the bed, not to mention the Eldar, oh, and the Hybrid minis, then there\'s the elfs and undead for Warmaster.

And thats just whats in my bedroom...

I\'d say its pretty common around here.

:D

........thats nothing Trev, do you remember the pic of my \'studio\' :D in the \'workspace\' thread.. the white chest of draws only has unpainted mini\'s in it (4 draws) & the top 2 draws in the brown one have a Tau, & a Necron army deal in them respectively, I have 3 other army deals I haven\'t even opened yet........
.......& under the desk.... .....well I dont even want to go there lol ......not for a while anyway lol lol
....oh...& then there\'s the shelves on the walls........
technically speaking I\'d never have to buy another mini & still be painting till I\'m 60!
(........yeah like that\'s gonna happen)
wha....where\'d that cricket come from? lol lol lol

Lead Hoarders Anonymous....

...actually not quite so anonymous after the PYP thread :)

Unfortunately Mark, you are not the only muppet - we have a cast of 100\'s lurking on these forums. We all have our own EEC Lead Mountain and most of us have the same \'issues\' as you mention. This is probably the only place where you could brag about the amount of unpainted lead you own and actually become revered for it lol

So.... just pull up a chair and join the happy gang :D

Oh, man, don\'t even go there - I\'ve got a whole cupboard of Confrontation, Reaper, and WH40K stuff stuck at Mother\'s ...

... and I\'ve just put in another 200 buck order for yet more Confrontation stuff at my place ...

My fiancee\'s going to rip my head off when she finds that her chest of drawers (for her clothes) are going to be hijacked to hold my new Confrontation minis.

I agree with you. I can\'t stand the thought of minis painted to a 6ft standard. I just can\'t bring myself to do it. Its the same as when I paint a mini - I make sure I paint details that may not even to seen - ie covered up by shield etc cos if I don\'t I know that they are not painted and highlighted even if no one else can see it!

I also think it a waste of cool minis to just slap and slop the paint on them - there are some beautiful minis out there and it is an injustice to them if you do not give them 100% when painting them.

The best way to complete an Army is to enter a Tournament. That way you\'ve got a specific target to aim for.
It\'s the only way I finished an army. Ever! (having said that I still have figures/vehicles to do for it. Sisters of Battle what can I say.).

Hey Mark,
If you really are trying to get that army painted, DO NOT WORK ON ONE MINI AT A TIME. Take ten minis from the same unit and do them all at once. Even if you are obsessed about making them all look good, you still will get them done faster because you\'re doing one color one each mini all at the same time (less time spend mixing new colors, opening new bottles, etc.). For example, I\'m doing a high elf army right now, I do the whole unit (from 8-16 depending on unit) at once. Metallics first so they don\'t get everywhere, then flesh, etc. I only do three colors on each section, basecoat, shade then highlight (less if its just a small strip with no folds). It is a different mindset, I go in with the goal to only average an hour a mini (so for a unit of 16, don\'t want to spend more than 16 hours on it). You could still go in with the goal of painting to a higher quality, but if you work on multiples at a time, at least you will save yourself some time. Anyways, hope this helps.

*breathes sigh of relief*

Thank god its not just me, felt a bit guilty today, was going to do some painting, instead ended up at a UO player meet in London for 8 hours :D.

Dragonsreach, to be honest I did all that milarky when I was 18-20, I\'m a more chilled out middle aged old fart now who is looking to start playing socially again without having to worry about powergaming 9 year olds [sorry for the generalisation] handing me my arse on a plate.

KatieG, cheers for the pointer, that makes good sense, as soon as I am back upto speed I\'ll give that a go.

Thanks again for the comments!

Mark.

PS Doug [doombadger], get to work you lazy spud!

I tried to do a squad of 5 SM scouts like that at the beginning of the month, the idea being to paint them quickly to a good gaming standard & put them on eBay for a quick sale lol
.....they are still on my workbench, ended up repainting the whole squad, :D
just about finished, only some detail to do, should concentrate on Sgt Cha\'kohtay today see if I can get him done in time for the GT (Golden Toadstool) :D

lol

I have a few months before we move house then I\'ll be playing more often, am looking forward to having my butt kicked for a while to be honest until I work out what the units actually do. I just liked the idea of a Beastman Army, Chaos warriors et al just seem too powergamey for me these days.

Damn I must be getting old.:(
