Metallics using MSP\'s

Hello everyone,

I\'ve walked away from the painting table for about a year, but am back into it and am having trouble with MM. I\'m using the triads, so I start with my metallic shade, thinned with 1 dp of flow improv, 1 dp H20 and 2 dps of paint, I paint that all over, then I use the midtone and highlight in the same way, only I of couse touch the higher areas with these two. It looks like crap. Any suggestions about what I should do? I can add a pic tomorrow if anyone is interested. Thanks.

Couple of things, water your paints down more, try adding two or three more drops of water to that mix.

Also try and shade the metallics down a lot more. Give them a few washes of black and brown. Followed by a few more in the areas you want darkest. Followed by a few more in the even darker areas.

pics, definitely. try using alcohol based metallics, don\'t have to worry about thinning them as they are thin as hell anyway, but with good coverage. then shade them down with various inks. if you need to re touch the highlights, try using vmc metallic base (or whatever its called)

Heya absolutrudy! I\'d suggest actually not thinning your MSP metallics so much; try either 1 drop water to 2 drops paint, or maybe 2:3. Or, as an alternative, instead of putting in flow improver, try Brush On Sealer instead (or Vallejo Matte Medium, W&N Acrylic Medium, etc) to thin heavily while allowing more paint cohesion (Brush On Sealer\'s used in all my glazes).

Automaton has a fantastic tutorial on this site you may have seen on metallics (Link Here) that you can use. Substitute Shadowed Steel for the BoltGun Metal, use Ruddy Leather, Brown Liner, Green Liner, or Blue Liner for the shadow colors, and highlight the metal with either going through the triad or just mixing in Polished Silver. If you have some Pearl White you can bump up the metallics a notch that way too.

If the metallic transitions are a bit rough, you can try 50/50 intermediates to see if they play better, or even very thin glazes of a light grey (Misty Grey) to see if it brings them together.
