Mikatu's WIP Thread & More

Ok so this is my first attempt to a Malifaux mini, but once you do one another is no big deal I guess. Well here it is "Kirai". She will be played and I assume no responsibility for a display level mini of course :), but would like some input as I am trying to get better with each mini I do. What paint technique maybe I am missing and maybe a glaze or no and of course the "OMG that paint scheme stinks!" will work as well. A friend got me on Cool Mini and I have seen some really cool things and would like to get better. Now this is a WIP so this is only basecoated. Trying to figure out what to do next other than the obvious (eyes, hair, etc)

Thanks in advance for putting up with my crappy stuff for now:)

Color scheme is fine so far. The skin tones are a little flat, especially on the hands. And I'm surprised that the sculpt is lacking definition there anyway. *shrug*

Haha stop being so self-effacing. This is the best possible place to get advice to better your painting. Now that you've got your base colors blocked in, it's time to start working on your shading. I'd start with the face/hair.

Ok here is the latest work done. Not much but basecoats. But I am happy with most of the results. Of course cleanup, highlights and jazz needs to be done, but I am trying :) I am however very displeased with the bad casting on her hands. Not much definition and I need to know some tricks to make that an illusion:)

There's not a lot you can do for the bad cast. If it was unpainted and going to be other than gaming, I'd suggest some dremel work along with some files to try to resculpt everything. But since it is gaming, I'd think either some black lines to separate the fingers, either in a super fine ink pen or with as thin and straight a line one could do.

***update***

Ok now I have added some blends, highlights and detail I think looks neat on hand, but the pics were kinda bad. But it is fun painting her! Now for a few more details and cleanup, then my expertise..........Basing!! Yes I think I do some good scenery work, better than minis I think lol.

I like the blood. I might consider adding an orange glaze over the robe to bring the yellow back in line without losing the brightness.

Just mix one up. Use the original orange you used, add some water and maybe a drop or 2 of matt medium and your away :)
Like the green and orange scheme. Works well.
Someone recently made a comment to me that i found really helpful, it was that when highlighting we are prone to just working on all raised areas but this isnt actually how it works. Some raised areas are in shade and so the highlight there would be a darker one. You seem to have grasped this on a natural level which is good but keeping it in mind as you work would really help create more depth.
Hope thats of some use to you, really changed the way i think of a mini for me.

I agree with what has been said. I think you are on the right track. One thing that looks off on my screen is the blood on the green part of the robe looks to close in color to the orange robe. Does not come off as blood stains to me.

Keep after the WIP tread and you will see steady improvement.

Ok so this should be fun.... Saint Celestine! And no idea of what I am wanting to do with her........ Well I know I want to incorporate Metal of course, so starting off with some Leadbelcher and highlighting with Mithril Silver I think. The outlining though will be Gold. Should look ok I think. Here is the first attempt.

Fast update on not much lol!! I do like how the gold is coming out so far., but again WAYS to go. The cape I am having issues with as a color. I like Blue, but again the roses on the sword will be red and not sure what would look good at this point... AHHHHHH choices, choices........

I like the way the metallics are coming along. We may need to find a way to get some separation between the gold and the silver though.

***UPDATE 2 - Celestine***

More base coats and some shading on cloak, but still in the very early stages. Thanks @TrystanGST for the idea of "Glaze Medium"! You are right... No more water for me to thin the paints. Anyway take a look. And as always feedback is more than welcome. Good or bad :)

This is coming along nicely. I think the brown actually looks great. I don't know that I would even go as high as ivory, like we originally discussed. We'll have to see how it looks with the other part.

The metals look nice and the brown of the cloak is a nice counterpoint. Very smooth transitions so far. It will be nice to see how it pops with the face done.

Nice progress so far, Have to say i'm not sure on the brown cloak but I seem to be the minority there and i guess it depnds how you push it with the shade and highlight. Whats your plan for the metals? Planning on adding a hint of colour?

Lol.. Well it seems brown in the pic. It is actually GW's Maroon Doombull Brown which is more Red in this pic than it goes on. I originally got it for "Rust" effect weathering on my tanks.
