I cut the cards out from a note card after painting the back and decorating the faces. Thanks for the kind words all, hopefully more work soon.

Wow. Those are detailed. Only one suggestion: Try to avoid using too much white. Typically tattoos use the skin as a negative space to represent white with shades of grey (almost like NMM in some respects) and only use white for very bright spots. If the colours are too opaque/pure it begins to look painted on.

Oh geez, that one is particularly dark. I had no idea of the source you were using. Carry on with the impressive detail

That's one serious body sleeve as refrence, your rendition is just as good ! If you want to make his tat look aged put a very thin skin tone wash over the top and it makes the tat look like it's in the skin rather than on top

Very very cool. Lots of fun details and creativity going on there. Interesting thought about adding a skin wash over the top. The colors on the reference are pretty vibrant, so the wash wouldn't fit there. But since you're calling the piece memories of Japan maybe making the tattoos look aged would make sense.

So are you done with the freehand or do you have more details planned for this guy?

thanks guys for the nice comments. I don't think I can fit any more memories on there so I will just start refining what he has so far. Didn't get anything done last night on him, I got to messing around with another 200mm pegaso girl and the AB. Not very happy with the result and may go in the stripper if I can't salvage her tonight.

What do you use your AB for? I just started to use mine to rough out base, pre-shades and highlights then I go back in with the the brush to refine it all. Sometimes it works okay, but it's so easy to overdo things and then have it look like just a base coat. AB learning curve = :bulgy-eyes:

I have only used it for the really big figures and I have had the same results. I pretty much do the first couple shadows and highlites then on to the brush. It is frustrating when you get great results on one figure and miserable results on the next.

Thanks VB, I think she has more of an 80's look to her, maybe that's what drew me to her.

So after using the AB on her and then lots of brushwork, I still wasn't happy. I decided to go back with the AB using super thin paint (almost as if I was painting sheer clothing) to try something new. I went back with a dark flesh tone to smooth some of the shadows then a lighter flesh tone for more highlites then white for the highest highlite, then a sheer blending pass with the dark flesh mixed with the light flesh. It really smoothed her out and I think I am happy with her now. I also started painting her top, I'm going for a velvet fabric look, for this I am using the difficult to work with Gouache colors I have.

Wow, very nice. Do you play with the PSI at all when you go super thin with the paints?
