Mind over matter, or no more brush-licking

Congratulate me -- it\'s been a month and I haven\'t licked a single brush! I\'ve quit this horrendous habit of mine, and as of now, I never lick the brushes anymore. Seems like I\'ve defeated a very powerful addiction... and proud of it! :D

Well done! That must be quite an effort! Don\'t you even feel the slightest urge when you\'re holding a brush in your hand? You haven\'t quit painting as well, I hope?;)

You are stronger than I am - I just can\'t seem to get a better point to my brushes than I do through brush-licking. At least I have yet to make the mistake of licking before cleaning :D

I never lick my brush, although a brush-licking friend of mine claims you must lick your brush to be a good painter. That\'s his way of making himself feel good about his habit, I guess.lol

I use to wipe off excess paint on my left thumb, the one holding the mini. That way I can also shape the point of the brush some. Now, that\'s also a bad habit (it looks a bit stupid when I forget to clean the paint off my thumb and go to work or the pub or something...), but at least I don\'t lick the brush.lol

That\'s what I thought, too, before I tried wiping the brush on a paper handkerchief instead of licking it to get the excess water and paint off. The sight of how much paint I would have literally consumed if I\'d licked the brush instead made me reconsider my habits ...

ah...gotcha. not really something that worries me. i\'ve done that before, and never seem to have much paint residue. besides which, it wouldn\'t really worry me anyway ;). its non-toxic and i\'m not overly concerned about whether its disgusting or not. its all in private :D

Congrats!

I have a question for you. Did you do anything special to stop brush licking? Like gum, zen meditation, a twelve step program, or something? Two of my friends are brush lickers and it still freaks me out...

Acryllic patches lol
Just kidding. Yeah, gum helps, haven\'t tried Zen just yet, though ...

:) Well done. I can just imagine you staring at a brush \"no. I\'m not going to lick it\". lol

So, what are you doing now with your brush to straighten the point? I (when I paint, which is not that often right now), dip the brush in the water and pull it over the back of my hand.

....**shuffles uncomfortably**

I\'m erm...Tammy, and I\'m a brushlicker....tried to stop, but it\'s just so hard you know, the peer pressure, and it\'s just so....so.....good....

Weird, I\'ve never been a brush licker. Always blotted with Kitchen paper instead.

That said I lick my sculpting tools. And that\'s worse lol

Historically minis were made of lead, so licking your brush after its touched a mini was really bad for you. Admittedly it never stopped me. Thank god for white metal.

(science geeks out there make my day by telling me that white metal is also toxic)

Yes, well ... but no matter how tempting it is, I\'m trying my best not to do it :)

As for straightening the point, the thing is, I use synthetic brushes which are quite firm and don\'t need much adjustment on the point :)
