www.micromark.com sells a resin kit at about $60. But that\'s everything: the resin mix, mixing cups, mold release, other stuff. Resin is good, but you just can\'t use oils on it, because of the chemicals.

You can\'t use oils on resin? Even after priming? Huh. Didn\'t know that.

I\'ve done quite a bit of casting with resin in the last year, and if you\'re going to do that you\'re really going to need some way to pull a vacuum to get the air bubbles out.

I think metals are your best bet for casting figs. I prefer resin simply because then I don\'t need to worry about heating the metal.

I started with the micromark kit too, but it can be a bit expensive there. You may want to buy it bulk at alumilite.

Yeah, I saw on some anime garage kit plac eonline that oils on resin is not good... Course, this may be the other type of resin I\'m thinking of (vinyl, realy).. Those types of kits are usually hollow cast, so there is sprue to some stuff you could try.. heck, I may just test it on a peice right now! Anyhoo, resin, plastic or vinyl, don\'t go near it with paint thinner!

Edit: D\'oh! Threw away the last of my scrap peices when I cleaned my desk! Oh, wel...

Hi guys,

I have used oil paints with resin kits for about a year now (Winsor & Newton Oil Colour), and never ran into problems with it. I have to wash the pieces with soapy water and a toothbrush before painting them or it causes problems, no matter the paint type. Cleaning resin is mandatory, not optional, imo.

I do an undercoat (acrylic) first, followed by a base color (acrylic), then oil blending on top of that.

Welcome Jeneki...

Thanks for the advice. As far as I know, apart from the extended drying time, there is no reason why oils could not be used on resin, but you could definitely have trouble with vinyl, which is I think what Chrispy meant. I suspect even this would work however, as long as an appropriate undercoat was used.
