Miniature Horror stories..it aint going to be pretty

I remember Mike Noe and Brian Librandi at Ral Partha telling me once they went to a convention and had a huge display of like 3 tiers of painted miniatures fall in on its self!!!

oh, once when i was still in the GW studio, David Galagher was mucking about with a shelf of the dwarf army, and the whole thing collapsed! 4 shelves of Eavy Metal army, it was like a miniature and glass sandwich.....

Another time, this guy from white dwarf was photographing a big Rohan battle scene when the backgroubnd board collapsed onto the whole damn army...

This is sort of a mini thing. I am part of a modeling group (planes, tanks, ships). One fellow there had a tank he had been working on and had left it on a desk untouched for quite some time. He had set in the window one of those thing\'s with a metal bar with two aligator clips on each end and a magnifiying lense in the middle for holding parts in. Not realising the angle/trajectory of the light when the sun showed through the window. The sun shown through the window, through the magnifiying glass and the hot beam of death slooooowwwlly went across the tank over and over till one day he notices a burnt plastic smell in the room. He brought the tank to one of the model meetings with this big long scorched hole crossing it!! lol

well my friend had a model of one of the 3 Columbus ships((plastic one not huge expensive wood one))..he goes to our local model shop to show it off for some reason he had to hold it up to go through a arch so it wouldnt get damaged..its his pride and joy..he catches the mast on the arch..snap..to most this would seema easy fix..apparently he had to remove every rigging piece and redo it all over again..

didnt happen to me but another tyranid player (works at local GW) i dont remember the exact details... however... i do remember this... the model\'s torso broke somehow but instead of falling off it simply swivled around due to the pin... was claimed to have \"super ninja powers\" after that due to the way it swivled lol its fixed now (if want pics of the model fixed i can show just ask )

It was a dark and stormy night. Then the creature appeared out of nowhere, and tore off the head of the hero. They all died. The end.

I painted a miniature (\"Marion\'s Mermaid\" which I just posted) for a friend\'s birthday gift... she loved it but other people at her party wanted to look at it and of course as it was passed from one had to another... it was dropped on its head :O THUNK. I had put about six layers of varnish on the head but of course it was still chipped in several places! This weekend I brought paints to her Hallowe\'en party just so I could patch it up...

Not much of a horror story, really. But a cringing moment for me as I saw it tumble in mental slow-mo. Thank god minis are no longer made of soft lead!

the living nightmare

every time i do a new mini, i learn something new, possibly due to the fact i ALWAYS screw something up.

Good horror story?
First i buy a wraithlord, then think....hey ill sculpt him an armpit so he can look like he swinging his arm instead of looking lame. Well i do it, and pretty well, but because the green stuff is still so soft i have to hold it to make it stay. so i sat there and held the thing until it cured. then i get to painting, doing pretty well, until i notice that the cables have had primer clump in them and you are now unable to see the cable ribbing (you know, on the arms to the guns, that cable). Anyway, i got to all this trouble, and i even do free hand on the wraithlords head of a rose (which, GASP, actually looks like a rose) and ta-da! But i have no clear coat to seal him. so i ask my girlfriend (who rocks) to go get me some on her way from work. She gets back, i shake it up, and lightly spray it. Ok, two things....
In louisiana, spray inside your house....the humidity is BAD for spray paints....Two, DONT USE TRIPLE GLAZE. I dont know what the hell that stuff is (i should of checked, but i just get so excited) but i leaves a thick whitish layer on top of the mini. so i had to go back with a file and pick of the glaze. It took me forever, but you can hardly tell. But try to imagine picking up your finished mini, holding it up in all its glory, and it looking like some one just hosed it with elmers white glue.

im doing a vyper right now, and this time there is a whole nother set of problems.....

Oh yeah, I forgot as a teenager I had a large model of a MiG-29 \"Fulcrum\" fighter jet displayed on a table in my room. I was very proud of it as it was the largest model I\'d yet built and the kit was rather expensive. (Of course) one day the cat jumped up on there, knocked over jet and table, irreparably smashing the former into a bazillion pieces. I still have some of it in my bitz box...

It is possible that this event precipitated my hobby migration from models to miniatures so I guess it wasn\'t all bad. But at the time it was heartbreaking.

Heard of a fellow who had a really sweet car. His loving kitty decides to go pee pee on his really sweet car. Hmmmmm, what to do?? Oh here\'s an idea! He puts the cat in a small cage and returns the favor!!

I had built a SOB immolator complete w/Forge World doors. Th primer spray clumped on it so I went to put it into the brake fluid. I mistook the Brake Parts cleaner for Brake Fluid and melted the entire thing. :flame:

I had just painted two Warmachine warjacks, and had not put the clear coat on yet. I left them that way for a few days, being busy with other things.
I come home after work to see my sister visiting with my girlfriend. I walk into my computer room/library/ hobby shop, and see one of my nephews has the warjacks and is playing with them banging them together.
I grabbed them from him.
The look in my eyes must\'ve screamed murder because he went running into the living room to hide behind my sister.
My girlfriend told me I walked in with my jaw set and that little vein in my forehead popping out, the way I look when I am truly pissed off.

I can share NSA\'s pain in the model department.
When I was 14, I spent 5 months putting together one of the largest plastic models then available. The Peacemaker bomber. The thing had a wingspan of nearly (or maybe over) 1.5 metres, and was similarly long.
Considering my age and all, I\'d done a darned good job on it, if I say so myself, and it had hung from the ceiling in my room for almost a year.

Then we moved, and the mover paid no mind to my \'don\'t touch that, I\'ll pack it myself\' instructions. I had a box, packing materials, and everything, all set for it.

And what does the idiot mover do? Cuts it down from the ceiling, breaks the wings off, and stuffs the three sections (body and each wing) into the box he was filling up with stereo equipment, and dumb-bells and loose weight plates from my home gym.

There was nothing salvageable left after he threw the 50 pound plates into the box. Literally.

well i officially have 1 of my own.... bought some wizkids mechwarrior minis (peices of crap altho in a way i do like them) spent aprox 8 hours repainting them (1 mech 2 infnantry and 1 vehical) and well i just clear coated them... thing siad crystal clear... unfortunatly its a bit glossy :~( altho i spose it doesnt matter much as they are futeristic? BTW eny way to remove the glossyness withought having to strip them? (as said tho it doesnt look THAT bad on them :S esp seeing as they are kinna kiddy..... besides..... could always sell them off or someting if i decide i dont like them?) just relized i used the same stuff on the entry for FF\'s contest... guesse i wont be entering this one ether

I assume that by \"mover\" you mean \"random crackhead your parents hired off the street to move their possessions\", because even the three-sketchy-fellows-with-a-truck that my friend hired once were a LOT more careful than that! Stereo equipment and weights in the same box? That\'s sheer idiocy without even mentioning the plane. And that kit must have been worth a lot right out of the box, didn\'t your family go after damages for it?

Mate - its the curse of the Ring! Make sure your friend doesn\'t have a video recorder (I hope she hasn\'t moved the curse to DVD lol)

I used to collect the styrofoam packing material from shipping electronics and carve it into terrain pieces more or less.
I had a gladiator\'s arena set.

One day I knocked it over with all the minis inside it. No real harm done except one thing that has plagued me for years. I had the old 1976ish Ral partha Winged Beast and Rider mini. I never did find the rider. It\'s still riderless to this day.

I have the Bridge of Sorrows dragon that was put together for me by a friend about 12 years ago or so. He was a fantastic converter, who angled the head up with greenstuff, and added some tilt to the wings with greenstuff. My lovely little cat at the time knocked it over, and the wings came off, and it snapped in two at the tail. Sigh.

Haha, Marion is more than a match for Ring-girl. Hell, she probably saved my life once by talking down a gang banger who was going to beat me up at the subway station in Toronto.
