miniature pet peeves

as the title says: what really ticks you off about stuff related to the things we all love???

to get you all started my two main pet peeves are:

1. rediculously hard metal alloys.

2. Pitting/crumbled detail on a miniature.

so come on.......out with it!:D

i feel ya....

1.) flash marks on hair

2.) detail that abruptly ends and then continues at a later point (like runes or the edges of the armor on my eldar).

3.) details that are so undetailed that you cannot tell what the hell it is (is it a bag? a holster? wtf?)

that is my small list.......

Everything else I can deal with, but;

I\'m not the first, and not the last, to bitch about mould lines. I hate mould lines more than anything else. They\'re the worst part of any painting project. Most often they\'re found after priming - one curse. Sometimes during painting - three curses. And sometimes (though not very often) they are found after the paint job has been done, and the camera casts its critical eye on an otherwise flawless work. I friggin\' hate mould lines!

You wanna know what\'s worse? Huh? Mould lines on plastic miniatures. Can\'t cut them off - that buggers up the sculpt underneath. Can\'t file them off, \'cos the file just gets clogged, and you end up with little burrs of plastic that don\'t just bloody well come off without scraping at them with a bleeding knife.

They destroy enthusiasm too! Proudly and smugly taking a new blister or box of minis home is quite the feeling. That is, until you rip the pack open to be greeted by the minis infested by Nurgle\'s mould lines.

Worse yet. Mould lines that run over a damn face...

I HATE \'em!

:bouncy:

Mine is... severe moldlines or any damage to the mini that requires tons of prepwork with sharp objects. Most of the time I can deal with this okay, but the thing that utterly drives me crazy above all else is mold lines across the *face*. Grrrr.

note...for mold lines on plastics (and to a degree metal) go to a pro paint shop (wall paint and car paint ect) and buy 1000 or 5000 sand paper....

It is tedious, but it smooths out nice (does miliput too!).....

files tend to be a bit TOO hard core for some of the more finer features....

yep, gotta agree with the mold lines. Just spent 5 hours tryign to get mold lines off plastic and metal only to discover after priming... they are still there! Otherwise i\'m tired of ungodly strong metals you can bearlt drill through and multipart figures that NEVER LINE UP! :flame: Few things suck worse then that cool figure you just got only to discover the parts attach as if frankenstien was the designer.

When dealing with filing plastic, buy emery boards.

Yes, those little manicure things your wife uses.
Finer than sand paper.
Cardboard so they\'re flexible, and can be cut to need.
They even work pretty well on metal minis.

I thought this was going to be about small animals

I once went to a pub (see the beer thread) whose owner bred miniature pinschers their beer tasted like they used the dog\'s p*ss in the brew:|~

Oh! and I hate the mold lines that you dont see until you are ready for the second coat of varnish!

Probably not fine enough though. Get some of that 500-1000 grit \"wet\" abrasive paper and glue strips of it to coffee sticks. Same idea, much finer finish. A handful of wooden coffee sticks from Starbucks etc will be enough for a lot of sanding sticks. Glue the paper on with non-water-soluble adhesive. \"Viola\"!

I hate the mold lines that are in fact little crevices in the sculpt, which essentially require a greenstuff resculpt to fix. On a current project I just cheaped out and hid them with paint, I won\'t say which mini though ;)

I\'m with everyone else... mold lines are the ancient enemy. A little flash I can deal with, but having the mold slightly misaligned is unforgivable.

My biggest pet peeve is something that stems from my own incompetence... trying to paint with a brush that has water trapped in it, then having all the water (and much smaller volume of paint that you intended to use) suddenly wick onto the mini, pooling all around the precise little spot you were trying to paint.

Thin, weedy miniatures made from lead that bend or break apart repeatedly (Read Rackham).

And things that are meant to go in to each other, but don\'t fit the way they\'re meant to. (I\'m not talking about sex here!)

Guys -

Plastic modelers have a solution for this issue -

Squadron signal makes a series of varying grit boards to take care of just this issue.

And Squadron is on the web - you can order direct from them.

Yes, I too hate mold lines on plastic -

Moulding lines down/across a face or hair.

And we all know the worst culprit for that Capital Offence. [cough]GW[/cough]

Why oh why can\'t the mould makers just spend 10 minutes talking to the scupltors about where the best places are to fashion the moulds?

Oh that would be Common Sense though wouldn\'t it?

FILLIGREE!!!

And those castings you occasionally (more so with certain manufacturers....) get where the two halves of the mould appear to have slid apart. You don\'t so much get a mould line as a mould mountain - completely wrecks the mini.

I bought a C\'Tan Deceiver off Ebay a while back and it looked as though Stevie Wonder had glued the two halves of it together!
