Miniatures transportation: share your secrets

Hi

Tammy\'s right about the historical guys doing it for years. Mario Fuentes (he who did the \'how to\' article on the Vallejo site) wrote an article on his transportation box using the bolt in the base and a fishing tackle box, this was in Historical Miniatures Magazine issue 26. Lots of pictures too.
I\'m at work now so don\'t have access to the mag, but the general idea is a hole is drilled in the base to accept a hollow threaded piece, and a corresponding hole drilled in the base of the box. A screw is then inserted thro the box into the base and everything is secure.

I\'ll have another look later tonight, and see if I can embelish.

Hi,
This is how I have transported some of my miniatures to GD:

- adding greenstuff around the bolt will secure the bolt further. As you can see this method also makes is easy to use (and re-use) display bases!

Aha, I see! Thanks for the excellent example, it all makes sense now. I think this is just what I\'m going to do -- thi way I\'ll avoind the mess at the customs if I have to open the boxes. Thanks for advice!

Yes, I see now :D It\'s just that this concept was so new to me that I couldn\'t really picture the way it was technically done.

That there is a very clever way to transport minis! I will use it in future...

This year to transport my display bases i put them in shoe boxes, then used ties threaded through the bottom of the box and then twisted secure.

For minis I just pack them into my GW case then clutch it to myself at all times on the plane and in the airport. (I wanted to through the X-ray machine with it, but they said it would damage my brain...)

This reminds me of a funny story. Once, after a day of gaming at the local club, my husband together with 5-6 friends decided to go to a pub for a mug of beer. Obviously, they all had GW cases with them. Now imagine the reaction of the pub\'s security team seeing a group of men, all with suspicious-looking black cases, entering the pub ... :D
They made them open the cases, of course. The facial expressions changed into something incomprehensible after seeing the minis ... :D

Hehe, similar thing happened to me...

At the airport, once I had allowed security to put my case through the X-ray machine, I saw the person who watches the screen give a strange expression. He beckoned another worker over, and the both stared confusedly at my case on the monitor. They let it pass, but the man did ask me what I had in it. If you think it\'s hard explaining what minis are to friends and relatives, it\'s doubly hard explaining off the cuff to a confused airport security personnel. Luckily I mumbled away long enough to satisfy him that I wasn\'t a crazy who was going to blow up a plane, but a crazy who\'d bring his toys along with him at all times. lol

Ah, memories. When my amily was going to Holland last year for a vacation we were about to go through the metal detector. Somehow when I was modelling earlier I had pocketed a large sword from a model. I didn\'t know if the detector would pick up pewter nor did anyone else and we figured that with the whole 9/11 scare we\'d be better off not taking the chance. I had to throw it on the floor and pass through. I can just imagine the headlines \"Plane Hi-Jacked by Teenager with Miniature Sword\" lol

Hi,

I\'ve never used the bolt and nut technique but I know it from tank modelers. A variation on this is for diorama vehicles that have to be removable. Sometimes these have a nut inside the vehicle belly plate for fastening to the base.

By the way, if I see correctly in the pics you have to turn the base around to mount the figure. This is a bit difficult with tank (antennas breaking off, barrel gets in the way, etc) so there you usually turn the bolt instead. Quick demo pic: http://shorterlink.com/?1SXPPK Most simple is with a shortened bolt. This also gives less problems with things sticking out of the box (the double bottom place in the other pic is a good idea by the way). With this you can also use more than on bolt if what you bring is a bit bigger. Thought you might be interested.

Something else. I don\'t know if Margo intends to bring paints, but if so, what are your experiences with that? Jenova showed on another list what had happened to her set on the way to the US and it was not pretty. http://www.heresyminiatures.com/forumofdoom/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=421&start=45 :(

Bye, Ming-Hua
