I\'ve tried using some 1200 Mr Surfacer as a primer and it\'s fantastic!
Am I having hallucinations? Has anybody else tried this, had bad/good results?)

Mr. Surfacer is part of the Gunze Sangyo line of Mr. Hobby products. This covers all their primers, paints and finishes.

In this case its the brush on Lacqure based primers in three different grades of smoothness. The higher the number the smaller the particle grind or smoother finish. So 1200 is smoother than 500. Also the lower number can be used to fill in imperfections in the model like scratches. Its designed primarily for plastic models. The product shown here is the brush on or mix with thinner to spray through a airbrush. They also selll the same product in spray cans. In my opinion is awfully expensive in the spray can. Also the higer numbers are so smooth they dont provide much \"tooth\" for brush on acrylics to adhere and you get a lot of streaking. If your airbrushing models the stuff is top notch.

Should be available through out the UK in Model shops. Ive seen it in a few places on my travels.

It\'s not easy to find in the shops in the UK that is why I buy it in Hong Kong-ebay.
1200 is the finest I\'ve used, I wonder if by \"lack of tooth\" you mean higher or 1200 (dont know if there is a 1500 etc).
Do you recon it would be a good primer for metal and or resin?

Lack of \"tooth\" I mean its very smooth and doesnt give the paint something to adhear to. The finer, the smoother the grade of primer Ive had this problem. Some primers can almost get a glass or plastic like finish and while they are fine for airbrushing on, trying to brush paint on them can be difficult.

As for if they are any good, wont know till you try ;)

I use this too - it does lack a bite like Wap says... one way around this is to give the mini a layer of dullcote to add some tooth (I actually use another Gunze product called Mr Super Clear which is pretty much the same as Dullcote)

But yes, it\'s smooth as you like. Grey is smoother, there\'s also white surfacer. Similar in smoothness are Tamiya\'s priming line, their grey is sweet as is their white (Tamiya Super Fine).

There\'s also Mr Base White 1000. Gunze do a whole bunch of cool products. I get the most use out of their liquid putty - it\'s basically watered down milliput and it\'s really handy for filling in pits in metal figures and sands down.

Other good stuff from there, Mr Mark Setter and Mr Mark Softer. These are excellent for decals.

AHHHHH!
just did some tests: on metal it\'s a great primer, I userd the 1200 to test it.
With \"minipaint\" brand paints it lacks tooth. With a coat of matt GW varnish it\'s ok, AND..... with foundation paints it\'s a sinch!!!! diluted, whatever - they l;ove this Surfacer!!!!
