Yup, no kidding. I\'ve, off and on, had a lot of shoulder/neck pain when painting and especially when sculpting. Using a dumbell - 11lbs/5kg has almost eliminated the problem. I try to mimic the motions and poses I hold while working so as to strengthen the proper muscles.
The motions I exercise most are one like you\'re \'hoisting a pint\' only going even higher than my mouth. One sort of like i\'m lifting a suitcase, pulling up to my armpit. and \'straight arming\' front, 3/4 and side. I put the dumbell on the bed in front of me and when I take breaks I\'ll do 5 to 10 rep\'s. I was surprised how quickly this cleared up my pain.
Hope it helps you. A bucket of house paint, milk jug, large soda jug full of water or sand will make a good cheap weight you can regulate the heavyness of.
