Misjudging a community forum

I have been busy with work recently and have had very few chances to delve into the forums. This I considered to be no problem because before I was so busy and tired the forum seemed to have a bit of inertia about it. I got back into looking in the last week and thought that as still so, until I looked at a few revived threards and some other stuff. What a surprise! Mike McVey telling Tammy to shut up, Tammy saying \'meh!\' to painting, some crazy gay rights argument in the Sulu thread (even the title caused offence to some poor sensitive soul) and then Klute and Alexi revisiting old rivalries. And now for the worst part...three of the threads I wanted to respond to had been closed! I am shocked to have missed so much. Therefore, one defence I was unable to make at the time of my realising I was being addressed shall be made now:

Quite right that gays shouldn\'t have to \'come out\'. Also quite right to criticise my saying Sulu (or whatever he\'s really called) wasn\'t true to himself for taking so long to come out. But whichever way you look at it, I\'m just repeating what seems to be the expected route in \'gay society\' as those gay movers and shakers in the media would have us believe. Stereotypical certainly, but gay people should probably go some way to thanking them for making the subject less taboo. Back to the original point I made in that thread though, I couldn\'t give a toss who is and who isn\'t gay. I believe heterosexuality to be nature\'s status quo, but balls to it, you\'ve all got your own minds! Do what you want! The only thing that gets my hackles up is camp behaviour...that is NOT being true to yourself - it\'s an act. Life should be about being real people...not some melodramatic facade.

Anyway, i hope there are a few more surprises in store - it makes my day to see stuff moving around here lol

Bonjour mon cher ami!

Real life takes over sometimes, eh? It will do again next week as swe\'re on the move. Got to reconnect to the old telephone exchange and get everything shifted...

I kind of wondered where you had gone, Rev. :) And, yes, there\'s been some action here. The rest of the forums were pretty much dead when the \'Natali\' thread were going... lol

Yep... \"Natali\" was interesting topic, I make this screenshot yesterday (users, reading \"Natali\" marked by red colour):

moderation...

Sorry Rev. As I closed 2 of the 3 threads you wanted to respond to, I feel like I should explain myself.

First of all, I never received the \'handbook of moderation\', so its just a bit of a stab in the dark for me.

I try not to be too quick to close things, as I think we really moderate ourselves pretty well. There seems to be a fine line that I can\'t always see if its crossed. I\'m not the adult in a group of children here. Hell, I\'m rarely the adult when I am in a group of actual children... lol

I only closed those threads because I thought they had degenerated past reasonable discussion.

I really don\'t take too much of this seriously. I also don\'t think Rev meant this thread as a complaint to the moderation procedures, but any chance to make you people read mindless ranting makes me giggle.

Right :D And maybe you should unlock WA, too :D Or perhaps I should just start WA II. At least then you could RIGHTLY accuse me of starting the dang thing lol

PS - Welcomd back, Rev. I missed you. Hope the move goes okay.

Well, here in Ontario, it\'s the usual November, which is to say grey, cold and depressing. At least I\'m not missing anything by being stuck in work all day.

Egads!! You are right! I have the power to unlock the WA thread. Talk about the nuclear option!

Absolute power corrupts absolutely?

Quite right Vike, in no way was it a gripe. I was just making a point I was unavailable to make before :D

And the move is to a new gaff down the road, about half-mile away. Looking good.

Lose - lose situation.

There is no easy option for mods. If you leave contentious threads open..people complain. If you close them...people complain:D

IMO CMON has easily struck the best balance between anal retention and chaos of all the large mini forums. Long may it continue..:D

Aye, long indeed. Started off painting with Dark Elves, and naturally made a showing at www.druchii.net. Now this is the Dark Elf forum, but what an unfriendly, humourless and lifeless (though very active) site! It is moderated to insanity. Comments like \"Is the search button not working? Thread locked\", are what a newbie can expect when asking a question. Granted, with the slew of kids they have, they have to keep tight control, but it\'s not a nice site to hang around in unless you\'re friends with the mods.

If a post contains two questions, one related to the particular forum, the other not, expect only the related question to be answered. \"Your second question is off topic, so I\'ll only answer the first.\" And that\'s from normal members.

Instead, they should be moderating comments like \"the best minis are washed and drybrushed\". lol Boy, am I glad I found CMON. :)

True.
Damned if we do.
Damned if we don\'t.

And the amount of quiet communication that is carried out in the background regarding contentious threads, would surprise most of you.
