Mixing chart?

I often read that you shouldnt mix with black for shading, and white for highlight. I have also seen painting tips like shading skin with a green tone and such.

Is there some kind of mixing chart for shades and highlights?

a good tip is mix blue with the shading and use an off white to highlight

adds depth and keeps the highlights spanky!

there is a whole colour chart thing but i havent got one as i am colour blind and they are next to useless for me!

This is a good case for not believing everything you read.

There is lots and lots of mixing advice in older threads here on CMON and on other mini sites, most of it geared to specific colours used to highlight and shade specific colours.

If you want something more generic there are some books worth hunting down; your local library may have at least one or two.

But a lot of mixing eventually comes down to trying stuff, seeing what you like yourself in the flesh, applied with your own painting style.

You can try using the complementary color to mix a shade with or a grey color with the same value of the shade you want. Black can have a muddying effect so IMO it depends on what paint you have and the properties of those particular pigments.
