Mixing M and NMM?

Dear (Mini) Abby,

I\'m having a problem and hope you can help me. I\'m working on a fig on which I\'ve done a small amount of NMM gold (the hafts of two swords). I just added a pile of gold and treasure to the base, and need to paint it gold too. However, I don\'t think I can pull off an NMM look on the pile of gold pieces. Do you think it would look weird if I did the gps in metallics and kept the weapons in NMM? Or should I just go back and redo the weapons in metallics?

Although sometimes it\'s \"acceptable\" to mix the metallics and NMM (say, metallics on the fig, NMM on a banner--rendering metal then shiny cloth---), I\'m of the inclination to say it would be a mistake in this sense.
You would be renedering metals in two different fashions (NMM, Metallic).
Personally, I would chance the failure on the gold pieces before I would put metallic on \'em.

Or, as you said---paint the other metal in metallics.....
The problem with this though is that it does nothing to help you learn if you stay in your \"safety zone\".
Chance it, dude....go for the nmm on the gold pile. Just work it *until* you pull it off.

I agree with what\'s being said! It would probably look weird (as in not good) to mix real metallics and NMM. I\'ve seen a few minis with mixed techniques and they all looked wrong!

Give it a try with NMM on the pile of gold. I don\'t think it would be more difficult, just more demanding on your patience. :D

Ok, I took your advice and went for it. The pic is below, but is not exactly true to life. In real life it looks much more like a pile of vomit. Ha! :D :( :(

Any Suggestions?

Yeah, it\'s that thing about how NMM looks so much better in photos than in real life. Also it\'s because I tweaked it a little in photoshop by playing with the contrast.

Which, I guess, is what I should do in RL to make it look better: intensify the shadows and the highlights...I\'ll keep trying and perhaps post another photo tonight.

Unless there are any other suggestions?

I\'d treat the pile of gold with a deep golden-brown wash a few times. Then I\'d pick out edges of coins, or whatever there is in that pile, with sharp highlights. As someone mentioned above, blendings don\'t need to be very smooth on small objects like these. Then as a final touch put spots of pure white on the most raised areas to make the gold \'shine\'. Hope this helps! :)

Just wanted to say an extra thanks to Ritual for the specific advice.

Thanks Ritual! My problem, I realized after trying your advice, was that I had been trying to use washes that were too yellowish. The darker brown really made the difference.

The NMM in the pile looks great.
Now I think on it though, why is there a pile of gold and gems on the floor? Is he saying \"whoops, now I\'m going to have to fight my way out\"?
