MM- Wolfen Prowler Paint-along

I feel pretty fortunate that I actually have the old Wolfen Prowler from Rackham, so I'm following along with the Miniature Mentor Complete Guide, trying to paint this guy to the best of my ability. I'm really hoping to paint him good enough to earn an 8.5 on CMON, so I could use some very honest criticism as I work on him because this is going to be my fun "flex" project for the beginning of this new year.

I actually painted him up over 5 years ago, so you'll get to see some of my old work. He's very shiny because I painted on gloss varnish. This was also my first attempt at using the tall grass on a base.

Here he is after a nice, long bath in Simple Green and a new coat of primer. The robes are done, so critique away.

I hope to make regular progress on this guy as he's my stress relief between coats on my commission pieces.

That's a really great, vibrant red. I have trouble getting them to look like that; mine always tend towards the orange. Great start!

If they end up looking too orange or pink, Proph, just give them a thin glaze with bright red. Works magic.

Thanks guys. For the robes I actually only used red for the highlight colors. Here's the recipe I used- note that I used very thin paints for this and glazed in most of the highlights and shadows:

base: Dark Flesh
1st shadow: 4:1 Dark Flesh to Midnight Blue
2nd Shadow: 2:1 Dark Flesh to Midnight Blue
1st highlight: 4:1 Dark Flesh to Scab Red
2nd highlight: 2:1 previous mix to Blood Red
3rd highlight: 2:1 Blood Red to Bronzed Flesh

The red is great, really clean looking. My only feedback is that the red highlights are even in brightness on all places. Maybe you can highlight the reds more towards white on the upper places (e.g. where the sun or other light source falls on directly). On a downside... adding white turns red pink. Maybe you can add yellow or orange to the mix.

The robes look real good so far... I would only suggest that you add some more color contrast in the deepest part of the fold to make the red stand out... I often use purple or blue in the shadow of red and the red pops right out...

Huh. I've heard of using green to shade red, but never blue. It works very nicely.
