I was wondering f anyone had tried, or put any thought into trying to use photoshop as a way to mock-paint

something along the lines of taking a few pictures of a primed mini, and using airbrush tool or what have you to sort of plan out your color schemes? or see how different colors might look together on the mini?

Funny that you mention it I did one of those last week for a conversion I\'m working on of a Reaper figure that I liked the pose and body, but wasn\'t too thrilled with the head and hair, wanted to get some ideas so took it into photoshop/painter:

It\'s helpful before approaching a figure with putty to kind of remind you what you\'re trying to do with it. Basically just took the example photo and painted over it. A cool thing is being able to mess with colors at will, then take the eyedropper and pick and choose the colors then compare them to the ones in your arsenal to find a suitable match.

Got the conversion mostly done, sculpted the horns, cloak and shoulder still need to do the armor and hair. Don\'t think I\'m good enough to bring the face up to the level I want, but yeah.

Beautifully done!

This exactly what I\'m looking for.

if you or anyone else has general advice on how to get the best results doing this, I\'d love to hear them.

If I had a good piece of advice it would be to use a drawing tablet. I\'ve always used one, (I think my first tablet was picked up in the 1980\'s.) so wouldn\'t want to mess around anything like this without. It can be done with the mouse and pen tool and paths of course.

Oh yeah, you can use different layers for different parts that way you can adjust color separately for each part if you like to play around with different color schemes.

A really quick way of adding colour to a model is to brush over it with the \"linear burn\" setting. I use this when planning a paint scheme, it\'s not as professional as the above method, but is a real quick way of testing if a scheme will work.

Gah! There was an article or topic on this within the last year (which is probably why I couldn\'t find it) where they put each color of paint in a different level, with a measure of transparency for each. I can\'t recall the details, but worked like a charm for testing different paint schemes.

Yes, I know that\'s no help, but maybe it\'ll jar someone else\'s memory and they\'ll point in the right direction.

EDIT: FOUND IT!

It\'s in the Warhammer Forum, and was linked to from this CMON thread. Oh, I feel so much better now.

I\'ve done it many times for Armorcast. It was quicker than \'real\' painting and just used for the catalog shots.
