Modelling stones?

Hi.

I\'ve had some problems about the stones on my bases. Either the stones are too hard to be drilled, too heavy, too big, or not the shape that I want.

I\'ve heard of stones that can be used for modelling. Is this a fact? Where can I buy them?

Your best option is not to use stones. :)

Try cork, for a start. You can buy it in sheets, and cut it to the required size, laying one piece on top of another to make a very realistic rock.

Another option, which I\'ve used quite a bit, is to make foundations out of epoxy putty. When the putty has cured some, then manipulating it will produce torn and uneven edges. These edges are quite realistic.

Now, while it may a stone, slate too is a good option. It\'s reasonably easy to drill, is flat, and also has some really nice edges.

And welcome, mutantpotato. I see you\'ve just come out of lurk-mode. :)

And while it may become messy, you can also use plaster. Cast a sheet, break it up in bits, work some pieces with a knife and you have stones. :)

what they said really. i tend to use either polyfilla (spackle i thing for the americans) or cork. i also sometimes use unused bits of gs and make impressions on them with real stones

Cork Milliput or even sandstone. Just about anything roundish can be used. Ive even layered cardboard to make rocks. Ive seen charcoal and firestarters used as rocks as well. Good luck.

Use sculpey, sculpt the general shape of the stone, harden it in the oven, and then carve all the surface, it will produce lots of microholes and textured surface on it... the effect is stone 100% try it! hehe and it can be drilled and all what you need!:D

For rocks big enough for a mini to stand on i use milliput. Before applying the milliput i drill a couple of holes in the base and glue short lengths of rod to act as a armature (of sorts) This is a recent thing i have started doing as i figured that maybe the sculpted rock could snap off the base. Once you have the general shape i finnish by rolling selected bits of cork that looking rock-like over the milliput.
Works for me. :)
