Molds

I\'m wondering where I can get the tools and materials to make certain models. I\'m not necessarily going to go all out and get the items, but I have been wondering where I CAN get them, so if anyone has any idea, please let me know.

You wanting centrifigal rotary molds like the real casters use or are you wanting something to do a one off?

Micromark
Smooth-on (lots of good tutorials and products)
Hirst arts (the tips section is great)

if you\'re actually wanting to cast up molten metal green stuff will not work as a mold.

That\'s when you\'d need a casting station in your garage with a melting pot and a centrigal mold spinner.

Hi and welcome.

A teensy bit more detail is needed, for a start is it models or moulds?

If it\'s moulds what\'s the master going to be made from? Rough idea of size? What material(s) do you want to cast in? Any budget limits?

Sorry about the earlier lack of detail, was in a bit of a hurry. But, yeah, I\'ve played with green stuff alot, but I\'m thinking of something along the lines of metal. Right now, I don\'t have a real price limit in mind because I don\'t know if I can even afford any of the cheapest equipment. Also, I need a way to make the molds as well. Thanks for all the help and the quick replies. I\'ll check again tommorow morning, err, if I remember that is. By tommorow afternoon for sure, heh heh. Though the current responses have helped quite a bit, I will most certainly have more time to do research tommorow and now I have a good start.

To make molds for casting metal minis, I use TC-5050 RTV Silicone, which I buy from BJB Enterprises. This stuff is blue when cured, and can withstand 850°F for short periods of time, or 600°F for longer periods, with no deformations.

Of course, that\'s just one component. Ignoring everything you\'d need to sculpt a figure, you need:

1) Modeling clay (if making a two-part mold)
2) Mold release
3) RTV Silicone
4) White Metal
5) A crucible
6) A sufficient heat source (I use a propane torch)

The details are many and varied, but that\'s the basics of what you need.

[EDIT]: Oh, and I forgot to add:

7) Lots of common sense

or... if your in the USA, Id highly recommend you hire a contract caster to mold your design and cast it for you, single figures are not that expensive to undertake.
If your looking for a contract caster, PM me and Ill give you a name or two.
