ugh, tough string of luck for my family these days - no one to vent to but my only captive audience - you :p
is anyone else really feeling the pinch from this \"economic downturn\" out there?

my wife was laid of (from a healthcare job, btw), my father was laid off, my father in law was laid off. oh, and my grandmother has about two weeks to live (pancreatic cancer, unrelated to the economy, but still, cant a guy get a break?). fortunately i was lucky (or skilled) enough to make it through the (first round?) of layoffs at my biotech employer.

im sweating bullets here people!
how are you? how are my favorite mini companies? hows the damned world?

The damned world ain\'t fun. I\'m not in your shoes, but I can fully sympathize - I just lost my job here, too. It\'s tough. Definitely feeling the pinch.

Hopefully, it won\'t last much longer.

Bad news about your gran, though. I remember how crushed I was when I lost my grandpa. Just make sure you say everything you want to say to her - I didn\'t, and it\'s hard to live with that.

But all in all, we\'re always here if you want to bitch :).

Family is Family, spend as much time as you need to with them.
We\'ll be right here when you need to talk, vent or even cry.

After 20 years of loyal service to the railway I got laid off last month, we all worked are arses off over the weekend and got a phone call telling us that was it it was all over on the Monday. I Myself and all the other staff didn\'t see a penny of a months wages so things here are pretty tight.
I have had to endure the signing on process (something that I have never done) which is degrading at best and the Job Seekers Allowance is an insult.
On the bright side of things though I am 99% on my way to getting back into work.

Very sorry to hear about your gran.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, FM, especially your gran. Fingers crossed that things pick up and, as DR said, we\'re here for you.

My bf\'s \"between jobs\" now too, his contract didn\'t get renewed. He\'s been jobhunting since he found out (back in Feb) and he\'s still looking. It sucks, and I can\'t do anything to help him. :(

Patently untrue, this.
Just being supportive and showing a positive attitude to him about the search is a HUGE help.

No matter how bad it gets, a positive attitude always helps weather the proverbial storm. Maintaining one when unemployed is very difficult to do. Every bit of support will help.

well both me and my GF are students (anthropology for me and medical stuff for her) so we dont feel the economic thing that bad, cos students are always in an economic crisis.

Well....

I´m a state-emplyed lawyer, and my wife is a doctor (so our jobs are pretty secure).

This coupled with the recession - prices on just about everything is dropping across the board - we´re making out like bandits at the moment (at least compared to when the world finances were \"good\").

But it sure did suck 2 years ago when every private employee were getting 10% raises every year and we were getting squat :p

- And I´m sorry to hear about your gran :(

Very sorry to hear about your gran funnymouth, and yeah right now the damn world isn´t as much fun as it used to be (at least from my point of view)

I´m a student (enviromental engineering ) and i have a part time job so luckily like phreak0 i don´t feel it as bad , but my dad has been laid of a few weeks ago and not only does the company still owe him payment for the last three months , they als have not send him his paperwork by now, so he can´t get full unemployment benefit till he finds a new job. My parents will probably get a lawyer but the prospect of paying someone a huge pile of money ( money they don´t have, guess why ) to finally getting the what´s rightfully theirs troubles them.

I\'m pulling 14 hour days to try and get a little bit ahead. My next check will have 105 hours on it. I get only about 5 hours of sleep a night so I\'m a bit cranky and I\'m packing up the minis in a couple of weeks getting ready for a move in August. I won\'t go into the details but divorce sucks.

However I have found over the years that it\'s times like these that make it possible to truly appriciate the good times.

Mr. Rastl just got laid off from his workplace after a few weeks of unpaid medical leave. As soon as he got his clearance to return to work he got laid off.

So now he\'s jumping through the hoops to get unemployment. Hopefully that will kick in next week. No shame in it - he\'s been paying into it so now it\'s time to claim his share.

I\'m lucky enough to be relatively stable in my work so let\'s knock laminate that it stays that way.

Well, ok, I do that as best I can, but being in another country doesn\'t help on that front - very hard to give reassuring hugs. :( And as selfish as it sounds, I don\'t want to leave my (pretty secure) job here. Another miserable unemployed person in the relationship probably won\'t help much.

Hang in there man. Tough to get socked in the mouth like that all at once.

My job is attached to the auto industry; our business is drying up with theirs. 2 rounds of layoffs for our firm in 5 months, and the market out here is flooded with the unemployed. There\'s alot of desperate folks around these days - the turnaround can\'t come soon enough!

we have been socked for 4 days of work. about $700 this past week. mainly because our son has been sick and have no family to take off days near us. we cancelled our retirement plan and got an extra $500 a month from that. but i feel like all we do is live off of our credit cards. its robbing peter to pay paul here. our jobs are good. but getting any kind of credit whatsoever is slim to none. and my credit rating isnt bad either. i have this summer off with teaching and what not, but it looks like i will be working for minimum wage at a local book store. its not bad, but still minimum wage for a guy who has a masters degree +35 hours of credits, and only 2 years from a Phd. damn is all i can say. will be praying for you funnymouth.

I searched for a job some months ago, so I could move over to my girlfriends town. I had some good joboffers, but mainly from small and new companys. With the financial crisis in the back of my mind I decided to accept a joboffer from a big company that is into receivership. I know it\'s quite cruel to choose a job which benefits from the financial crisis but I didn\'t want to get laid of myself after some months. :( The payment is fair but not as good as many other joboffers. We will see... I guess you dont\' have many choices in this times. Wish you all the best! Keep your chin up! Hopefully it will get better SOON!
