Monotone Chaos Giant

Hello again, folks.

Usually I like to paint my minis "alone" but this time I thought it would be nice to get some critique and improvement advice while painting. The mini is Ral Partha's old chaos giant (from 1977!) and it's almost finished but it still needs some fine tuning. I haven't touched the club, boots, eyes, satchel and bracelet yet, excluding the base paint (although some already got wash on them). Normally I would be rather satisfied at this point. But I tend to be quite blind to own works so I would like to hear some hints about how I should proceed and get it (more) better.

Especially I need highlighting suggestions with the boots and club (they are both base painted with GW Rhinox Hide and the boots already got some wash on them). So far I've tested different highlight colors but everytime I made the contrast of the whole miniature disappear and had to repaint those parts.

I'm also practising shading skin with two tones and already chose the greyish dark blue as the main shading color. But how about the second one? I wouldn't like to use pink or similar tone because it might destroy the cold look of the skin.

Also the brown hide below the belt feels slightly separate compared to rest of the mini. So should I repaint it (just that hide) or add some darker shading? Or something else? ...or am I just thinking things?

~Ah, and sorry for the slightly bad quality pics - I should have used lighter background (black bg made the skin look whiter and duller than it actually is). But well, you'll still get the idea.

it looks really good, I'd change only 2 small things:
- hair and beard a lot lighter (almost like the fur on the stomach)
- brown hide below the belt: either a lot lighter or a lot darker.

This way the contrast between the beard and skin (or between the hide and skin) is much greater.

I don't think there is a need to add more highlights for the boots or to the club.

Thanks for the suggestions! I was also thinking about highlighting the beard and hair slightly further. Although just some minor highlighting to places that catches more light because I'm going to put him on a heavily snowy base with snow-burdened spruces so there would already be quite lot of white around

I like these monotone schemes and you are doing a crack job of realizing it. I have to get the nerve to try this scheme at some point.

This sort of color scheme is not so difficult to achieve actually. My usual guideline is that you pick two main colors and one color that determines the overall monotone-niness(asdhfszfgfiodjfnh). Then you just start to add the latter to almost every paint you use in the mini or pick paint that's slightly toward that color. For example, if your mini is bluish and you want to paint red cape for him, you'll choose or mix paint that is purplish red. Also try to avoid pure black and white.
