Monster payback

I was hoping to get clarity. On a recent game, during another player's turn, he aggroes an Orc using a ranged attack while one of my characters is standing in between them. Now since the attacking player is out of range even after the Orc moves one tile, does this Orc get to attack my character instead?

Thanks for the clarity. Oh here was another debate we had, does the monster have to move closer to its assailant? Or can the controlling neighbor player try to move the monster somewhere that is advantageous to the player instead? Assuming the monster can't reach the assailant regardless.

so if during controlling a monster that's been triggered for payback, if he chooses to attack another player that is not the assailant then is this considered a legal move?

He can make an attack which impacts others... as long as the target is the one who triggered the payback... like Smetterling's attack.

OMG this just sooo adds depth to the environment mosnters!!! No wonder the monster controller rotates...it's not just about dice rolling, but also some strategizing

Payback's are optional, guard actions aren't. It's in the rules.... although I wish guard actions were optional because you can do some borderline overpowered things with Spike/amulet of retribution.

Now that we've played guard reaction as non optional, the game balance feels great! Thanks for the kind answers!
