That looks real good! Got him done and posted.

Vermin Fur/Orange makes good instant rust, just very watered down.

Here is an updated photo of the Troll Chieftain. I had a really big setback recently...one of those unpleasant events you never want to have as a miniature painter. I was photographing my other work in progress, the Witch King on Fellbeast, when I knocked over the Fellbeast. It tumbled off the table and bounced a few times on the concrete floor. \"NOOOOOO!!!!!\"

Parts of it were bent and chipped. The glued on sand, rocks, static grass, and dead Riders of Rohan actually separated completely from the plastic base in a flat sheet. I should have taken a picture of it I suppose. But I was in too much shock.

Anyway, I\'m back to work on my Troll. Let me know what you think about my progress on the Troll. Is the figure too dark? Do the colors work? Should there be more or less rust? A few additional photos can be found here: http://home.earthlink.net/~delbertcho/

First of all: I can feel with you, it happend to my Ork conversion a few days ago, but luckily i broke \"only\" the blade...
As for the troll: Its simply stunning !! The colors work really well together, the lighter parts of the skin (as on the left arm) make it really pop out and dont make it too dark. I also like the way you brought some complemetary (hope its the right word my english is a bit rusty :D ) in with the red of the mouth. In my opionion its just enough rust, i would keep it this way. Im looking forward to see it finished.

Edit: Thanks for putting the NMM recipe on your page (just loked at it).

Thanks, everyone, for all of the feedback! This figure has been taking a long time, but I finally feel like I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I\'m finishing up his weapons and working on little Pippin. Still, I can\'t help finding little things to touch up...a little extra highlight here...a little extra glaze there...etc, etc...

Broke n English: by the way, what\'s \"pukka\"? I\'m not familiar with this word. It\'s a good thing I hope :duh:

AZOutlaw: I liked the way you did the rusty armor and axe on your Chaos warrior--very nice! I also like your High Elf.

You win.

This is how trolls should look. I love the look of the armour in that latest photo. Extremely well done, and welcome to the forums (just had to get that in...).

Finally a chance to get back to painting and posting! I\'ve been on vacation with the wife and kids, so my poor troll has been neglected for a while :(

Anyway, I need help with his sword. It\'s been bugging me. Even with some rusting, it initially looked to clean and unrealistic to me. Even the rust looked like it was just painted on. So I\'ve been trying to give it a more mottled and irregular look. But I\'m not sure what else to do with it.

Here are two photos with different lighting. I\'m having trouble with the photos also. Near the bottom of the blade is an ugly white streak that still needs to be corrected.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Nah that\'s it you\'ve ruined it now, best strip it or even better send it to me! lol:p Just kidding,I\'ve been looking at rust on motors (cars!) recently and all the skips in my area, your sword looks spot-on,I find real rust does tend to look a little unrealistic when compared to the old techniques painters used to use but with the way you\'ve done it (the new-style) I think it looks perfect! :D *Edit*--The top picture seems to show more definition!

Broke n English, you crack me up! :D:D I guess I\'d better get to work stripping off the paint...I find the sledge hammer technique is very quick even if you do remove some metal along with the paint! :D

Anyway, here is the other side of the sword as well as his mace. I added some texture to his left arm which otherwise looked too smooth.

I agree with what\'s been said, beautiful skin, very nice weathering and nmm in generall, couldn\'t you make the sword even bigger? maybe not at this stage, it\'s fine how it is.

overall an exquisit piece, and it\'s not even finished.

Finally finished

I finally finished and posted pictures of the Troll Chieftain and Pippin. A big thanks to everyone for their feedback on this thread--it really encouraged me to keep going.

A vote and any comments would be tremendously appreciated. (I hope the 2nd post of Pippin is OK since he\'s so small).

A dumb question--should I also post this in the \"Discuss Submissions\" topic?

Attaching Pippin took a lot longer than I had anticipated. I had to resculpt the rock underneath his foot. I chipped his paint several times, so I had to touch up a few places.

Here\'s a closeup of the troll\'s face:
