More Important

What is more important to you or any warhammer player, do you think it is the look of the models you happen to like, or is it the strategy you prefer, for example there is a player, this is just an example it does not involve anyone, if a new player comes upon warhammer, he likes the look of wood elves/elfs, however you wanna spell it, but knows that his strategy is defence, a defensive style of play, and finds out that dwarfs are the perfect defence army, but he happens not to like the look of them at all, which one do you think he should choose, i have thought about this and i think it\'s kind of a hard decision.
This is just an example and i am not being biased towards dwarfs/dwarves.
Opinions more than welcome

Well, that is actually a very hard question to answer - personally, I would choose the models I like, as i can always change strategy, but it is much harder to change the look of models if you hate them.
It does, however, depend almost entirely upon the person in question and I don\'t think there is a \'right\' option to choose.

I buy the figure I like and adapt the army to the way I play. But if you only have one strategy you wont win often. I have used Dwarves to charge Chaos Chosen knights and I have played Chaos defensively. Buy the minis you like and learn how to use em I say.

I tend to choose models based on the look. After all, If I can\'t stand the models I\'m not likely to paint them.

As far as the style of play goes, If I win half my games i\'d be doing well.

My guess is that you\'ll see a lot of people on this site that prefer the look of the models when chosing an army. I personally, think they are all great (I can\'t find one I hate from and brand or line), so I choose armies based on which background I prefer.

Price.

I am painting a High Elf army (total over 4000 points) and plan to play it.
I chose them because I got the whole army for $30 second-hand, unpainted.

More importantly, are the willing to do it again?! lol

For me the models matter quite a bit, that being said there really arent very many ranges I dont like (well in fantasy at least... not a big fan of 40k, but then again those tau are starting to look pretty tempting. mmm... mangaliscious). Strategy isn\'t a big deal for me, as long as I can find at least one way to win, at least once.

At risk of giving away my secret sources, it was an antique dealer.
I was in an antique shop, and there was a glass case full of little ceramic figurines, and there in the back was a GW elf. I asked about the elf and the owner said, oh yeah, I have a box of those somewhere. He pulled out a broken box full of jumbled pieces and said he\'d sell it for $40. I offered him $30 and he took it. When I got home and realizd there was enough lead and plastic there to build a small army (plus odd bits like 1 skaven and 1 space marine), I decided to make an HE army instead of reselling them. When a kind friend found out I was building a HE army, he gave me some stuff he\'d collected but never done anything with - doubled my army but I\'d still only spent $30 on it. (oh, I did have to special order a new left talon for the griffon and a pair of legs for a dragon prince and of course buy the books)

The thing is for any given army depending on your opponent your strategy might very well change. Take your dwarf example, against a chaos army with loads of knights a shooty/defensive dwarf army is probably going to sit back and take the charge and try to shoot them all up first. Against a shooty warmachine heavy empire army someone has to attack, so the same player might find himself taking the fight to the empire so he doesn\'t just sit back and get raped by cannon and hellblaste fire.
Any army can play any style with the right list, with maybe the ogres as an exception as they pretty much are going to be trying to charge as often as possible. Its all a matter of picking the models you want to do the job you want them to do.
