Mosaic floor, ruins

Hey guys,

If I wanted to make a mosaic tile floor or make something look like ruins where would I go to find the materials I need? I really don\'t want to be casting basing stuff so if there is an online shop that sells precast stuff that would be the best bet for me.

meg, a piece of polystyrene (blue or pink house insulation)
A hot solder iron.
A bit of time.
Paint.

Thanks for the recommendation, I\'m trying to not acquire much more stuff until I move so a soldering iron shall have to wait. I\'m trying to be creative with limited time, materials and space.

oh and airhead, I\'m not lazy, just not a master sculpter yet. I\'m getting little bit of practice right now, but trying to sculpt a ruin . . . it would look very campy. usually I\'m better if I have a visual aid.

Interesting ideas guys! Thanks you\'ve got the noggin\' turning ideas. Maybe I will try to sculpt the floor . . . as for the ruins stuff I may have to hit up a couple people that I know have the hirst kits for now.

I just don\'t want to delve into another part of the hobby. I hear hirst arts is addictive like crack.

By the way airhead I wasn\'t meaning to sound snarky. I was just saying, \"I\'m not being lazy just don\'t think I can provide something super professional\" :D

Meg, not to worry. If I win the lotto, I\'m going to go pay Mr. Hirst a visit. Othwise, my garage is full of all my other hobbies - so I quite understand not wanting to take on anything new.

Search Hirst Art on ebay. There are a few seller of \'kits\' there. I\'ve done the arch bridge and egyptian ruins that way without having to invest a ton in molds and casting time.

How many floor tiles you think you need?

You can make a mould really quickly using GS or Sculpey:

Take a sheet of plasticard - you might even be able to find mosaic textured plasticard. If it\'s plain, score your tiles into the surface.

Roll your putty out over the plasticard - dust with talc to help you peel it away when dry.

All you then do is build gating on the sheet of hardened putty and pour plaster in. When it\'s set, you can batter plaster very realistically.

I suppose it depends how many tiles you need. I used thinly rolled GS and a pair of scissors to make the tiles for my butterfly lady, didn\'t take too long, and you don\'t get much more simple than GS and scissors! For a mini-sized mosaic, same idea, but score the tesserae with something sharp and pointy.

Hmm, for the tile floors at least, I suggest going to your local generic hobby/train store and picking up some sheet styrene (tile). I\'ve got sheets here that have 1/4\" and 1/8\" squares. Though the stuff is a %^&*% to use on non-square bases...

ETA: I FAIL at reading comprehension, I see you wanted a mosaic tile floor :redface:

Meg: I have to ask do you really mean mosaic tiles or do you just mean floor tiles?
Because in real life a mosaic tile would be no bigger than my thumbnail, (1.5cm square) so a scale 28mm mosaic tile could be depicted by a tiny spot of paint.

However floor tiles cut to shape to form patterns as seen in so many building foyers are a different matter and that\'s eaily carried out by cutting Styrene sheet (plasticard) to fit your pattern and painted accordingly.
