Most Known Miniature Game Companies

So I am doing a presentation for a marketing class I am taking and I am trying to see which miniature companies are in competition with GW. The main 2 that I can think of are privateer press (warmachine, hordes) and Rackham (confrontation, at-43).

What are some other companies that are fairly large and in competition with GW?

Battlefront Miniatures, makers of Flames of War, are probably another Top5 company I would imagine. Crocodile Games maybe? They have a lot of nice minis (former GW sculptor Chris Fitzpatrick does stuff for them) but I don\'t know if anyone actually plays.

The funny thing about the wargaming industry is how close it is to a monopoly. Reaper, PP, Rackham and some of the other \"major players\" in the industry actually make up a tiny portion of the market share. I haven\'t seen the studies themselves, but (according to the head of Canada\'s Retail division) GW has over 95% of the market share worldwide. That\'s pretty crazy. Given these statistics, it\'s pretty hard to say there are any large competitors for GW.

Warmachine/Hordes has been fairly popular the last couple of years, but not many of the other games have very active gaming communities (at least from what I\'ve seen/heard in Canada and on forums). Rackham is way more known for their (now OOP) metal range than their games, and Flames of War is a fairly small niche. Reaper might not even factor into the GW competition because the vast majority of what they do is D&D Figures. Way back in the day that was Citadel\'s bread and butter, but they\'ve come a long way since then. The tabletop/RP split probably skews the numbers a bit, but realistically it\'s still a pretty huge gap between GW and the competition. I dunno, does this qualify as an oligopoly? I didn\'t take anything beyond first-year Microeconomics :D

I\'m curious about the nature of the project, and what you\'re looking at in the gaming industry. If you don\'t mind posting any of these details, I\'d sure be interested to find out :)

there are a lot of companies that are in competition with GW...
the main question would be what percentage of the market that the other companies have...
infinity seems like a small game, and i don\'t know anyone who plays, but both their spanish and english prints of the rulebook sold out, and they\'re on to v.2, so they must be doin\' alright...
croc is already on the second version of their rules...i don\'t know many people who play, but the forums are pretty active with players...seems that the historical gamers are big fans of aegyptus...

@jericho: fitz is the owner of crocodile games, and the creator of aegyptus...

point is, there are a hundred little companies in competition for sales...if ya break it down though, i\'m sure you\'ll find that gw doesn\'t have a lot to worry about...

cheers

are you focusing on just tabletop wargames? or miniatures in general ?

There are tabletop wargames aside from the realm we are all focused on. There are historical wargaming castors, science fiction miniature casters, and fantasy castors which we are well aware of.

Tabletop wargames have been dated back over 100 years for military and tactical use.

I think the difficulty of considering GW just a \"miniatures company\" is that this would put them in the same category as scale military companies as well. This clearly isn\'t their intended audience, and the two don\'t overlap very much.

I think sticking to tabletop wargaming companies makes more sense, and here is where you see all the smaller (not to say unsuccessful) companies like PP.

Jahminis: Thanks for clarifying, I\'m clearly not an expert on Wargods or anything :D

Urban Mammoth (was originally produced by the company I-Kore)
Celtos (Can\'t remember who owns it now)
Rezolution.
Helldorado
Infinity
Anima Tactics

All these games/models owe a lot to D&D and equally to GW for opening a market place which they have managed to exploit (in the best meaning of the word.)

I was just trying to focus on other miniature companies that make fantasy based tabletop battle games (sci fi included in fantasy). So this would exclude historically based mini games.

So kraken editions, privateer press, rackham and the like would be fair game.

Are Reaper miniatures just for display purpose or do they have an actual game system?

would the makers of \'Cliks\' be included in your study? So what Whiz Kidz?

i don\'t think wizzkids can be classed as competition for any body at the moment.

any company that produces miniatures is competition for games workshop, what you need to do is work out which companies are in head to head competition with gamesworkshop.
also, which continents support gamesworkshop sales better than others.
