Most popular mini 2009...

As somebody who\'s been painting/gaming for years but hasn\'t been involved with the wider \"hobby community\", until this place really, I have a question...

It looks to me as though, so far this year, the GW Juggernaut Of Khorne is a super-popular figure. I just wondered if you all agreed or perhaps there\'s a commited \"vote on every entry\" person out there who has a better overview? What\'s shaping up to be the figure that defines 2009 for the Gallery?

In previous years what would you assess to be the most popular production mini for Gallery entries? I\'m wondering if they\'ll all be 40K?

Cheers, B.

To be honest, for me there\'s no one specific figure that stands out as Head and Shoulders above the others.
Seeing as this is July I think it\'s a little premature to describe any figure as the defining one of the year.

EDIT: I take part of that back. For me the front runner will have to be this one:

Ooh, in case I\'ve not been clear enough (hardly unusual lol ). Not the figure that gets highest rated (most popular) but the figure that most people have purchased, painted & submitted (most popular!). So I suppose the \"best selling\" figure is the gist. That two-headed Hatter is beautifully painted but I suspect there won\'t be 100 different ones entered in the Gallery by years end (sits back, prepared to be proved wrong!).

I confess DR that I quite like the Jugg sculpt, particularly compared to the original!

The juggernaught is only popular because of the GW fanboy club and a lot of people out there don\'t know others exist...(ducks at incoming bararge).

Although the Humpty Dumpty that DR has posted a pic of above is a nice model (its still growing on me) I still prefer the Dragon and the sumoner that they do.

Also being a complete mini whore I very much doubt if I could choose a mini of the year at any time of the year to be honest  :D

If you go by what\'s posted HERE, then I\'d assume it\'d be some GW miniature, as the majority of the stuff here are GW minis.

If you go by what people enter in the big miniature shows, for instance, you\'d probably come up with something else.

Cheers Ritual, I see. A Gallery search for GW brings up 8056 pages of results whereas Ral Partha (who I thought would be high simply by virtue of producing figures so long) only brings up 106! I guess that means I\'m simply asking what do you expect to be the best selling GW figure this year & what was it in previous years? Not as interesting. I wonder if GW is still top if you only look at paid up members?

At UK miniature shows is there still a preponderance of GW compared to other territories? I\'ve never been to a show but have seen on here where people mention Euro-Militaire (?) & the like so I assume that once you spread out from the sci-fi/fantasy end of gaming minis on to a full range of military/busts/etc you get a lot more variation. Are there a couple of companies who dominate or does it just vary sculpt to sculpt?

Thank you, B.

I guess things are different depending on if you look at gaming shows with minature exhibitions/competitions (like Salute) or if you look at the more traditional shows (like Euromilitaire), who have their roots in the historical/military miniature hobby.

I have not been to many gaming shows, but I have a feeling you\'ll see more typical gaming miniatures there, although done to a competitive standard. You\'d probably see a lot of GW stuff, although they\'re probably less dominating than here.

If you go to a traditional model show, most of them having fantasy categories nowadays, you\'ll see a lot more large scale stuff (even in fantasy) and more high-end 30-35 mm miniatures (with that I mean stuff like Ilyad, Artefactory, Enigma, etc.). You\'ll see more busts, as well. Simply put, miniatures that are less gaming oriented.

One company that seems popular in both types of shows is Hasslefree. They are simple enough in design to appeal to gamers, and so masterly sculpted that they appeal to high-end painters as well.

Not really.
In fact up until recent years I\'d have to say that GW entries for painting competitions were in the minority as they were mostly dominated by historical figures.
In regards to sales positioning at shows well GW usually has a presence but are seriously outweighed by the wealth of historical and other \'imaginative field\' manufacturers.

Regarding the \'balance\' between GW and other manufacturers you have to look at the balance of forums regulars who know and purchase other manufacturers and then consider the amount of non-forum participants of the site. From that you can consider how many are still teenagers and only have knowledge of GW.

If you just mean most popular model sales wise, it is and likely always shall be the basic 10 man Space marine kit form GW I bet. I\'d wager it\'s the most submitted on CMON as well, seeing as they\'re plenty of group shots submitted.

Good stuff at Hasslefree for sure!

Well, by no means do I think they\'ve become the most popular, but I have to say I\'ve been rather taken by Werner Klocke\'s output with Freebooter minis. The sheer number of stuff I\'ve bought and even more I want to buy is staggering.

As ever, when the question\'s asked \"Have you painted any\", the answer\'s always \"not yet!\".

For shame...
