Movie: Cthulhu

This doesnt look too promising at all...and the fact that Tori Spelling is in it makes it even worse.

I recently got the movie DAGON from Netflix....I had very low expectations of the movie, but was almost pleasantly surprised. It was like a modern retelleing of the \"Shadow over Innsmouth\". Check it out, its b movie schlocky, but still not bad.

I heard Guillermo Del Torre (sp), the guy that directed HELLBOY has a Lovecraftian movie in the works...AT The Mountains of Madness.

Dagon is good in a cheesy horror sort of way :D I\'ve owned this film for a few years now.

The website above that I was directed to wasn\'t promising enough for me to even look at the trailer!

Shite! Utter Shite!

What has the world come to when innocent H.P. Lovecraft literature is treated like this!!??

That \"At the Mountains of Madness\" flick sounds good, though, super... any link to the rumors?

The only decent thing about it was some humanoid shapes coming out of the sea at the end (deep ones?)

I\'ll look into Dagon...

YOu know something is fishy when they have links to \'gay stuff\' and put \'gay stuff\' in the film just because they like \'gay stuff\'. Well done chaps, well done. I thought that clinch was a bit weird in the trailer, what with the touching hands from the blokes in the previous shot, but not because I give a toss about sexuality, just more because of their liking of \'gay stuff\'. I always thought the point of film-making was to challenge yourself and your audience, not just chucking any old tripe in there because you like it. I\'d avoid this film like the plague simply because of the attitude on the website. Unprofessional :D

They\'ve done worse things. From Beyond comes to mind.

Oddly, I went to IMDB and looked up \"Lovecraft.\"
There were 59 different adaptations of his stories listed.
Most of them got good reviews.
I wouldn\'t trust the reviews though, because they seem to have been written by fans of 80s slasher movies, which is what From Beyond was, but not what HPL wrote. Here\'s a line from one of the reviews:
\"The ending is pretty gory though and makes up for some of the bad parts of the film.\"

However, the recent film \"The Call of Cthulu\" is described as a faithful adaptation and is compared to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari\" and \"Golem\" which were awesome 1920s horror flicks, so I\'m keen to see that one.
Same sort of opinions on the animated \"Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath.\"

Linkage...

Theres some good stuff in there. I really loved Hellboy. (Pan\'s Labryinth looks interesting as well)

The HPLHS (HP LOVECRAFT HISTORICAL SOCIETY) did the \"Call of Cthulhu\". I am going to order that but the trailer is very cool....

To reverend\'s point...I saw that link to \"gay stuff\" as well, and pretty much felt the same way you did. Its like the whole website and movie is just a big middle school joke, so why would we bother?

EDIT....incidently...the PC game \"Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth\" should be released here in America this week. From the screenshots, it looks pretty worthwhile...

I had the xbox version for christmas and its one of the best games I\'ve ever played. Starts out with you investigating a dissappearance in Innsmouth but then the locals turn nasty. Very gory, very scary and very very good.

\"Re-Animator\" is the only Lovecraft film adaptation I\'ve seen... Is it \"good\"? I dunno. I was intensely entertained but there was a lot of cheese and silly bits. It\'s a pretty loose adaptation though at any rate.

I remember \"Re-animator\" being much better....

I just recently watched it. Cheesy only begins to define it.

I especially cringed when the beheaded mad doctor used his old body to move his head, and \'go down\' on the naked hot bodied captive co-ed.

Just like Lovecraft intended.

Cheesy yes, but I really enjoyed (and own) Re-animator, and Dagon. There have been a lot worse than even From Beyond. This new one looks like absolute filth. If you want a movie way more along the lines of HPL, watch \"In the Mouth of Madness\". I really like that show... especially with the Old Ones appearing at the end.

Cool! Never even heard of that. It has one of my wifes favorite actors too...Sam Neill. Added it to my \"netflix\" list. Thanks Zaph!

Oddly enough, that movie along with \"Event Horizon\" are two of my favs, despite the terrible reviews both likely garnered at the box office...

I do remember a few other terrible Lovecraftian movies (like I said, From Beyond wasn\'t so bad after all) like Cthulhu Mansion (with Melanie Shatner :p) and Necronomicon.....
