Movie review: Superman Returns

OK, this is not the comic book Superman, this is the Superman of the movies.
The movie never tells you exactly when it took place, but it seems like it took place five years or so after Superman II, ignoring Superman III and IV (as they should.)
The Lex of this movie is similar to Gene Hackman\'s Lex, and his evil scheme is just as hokey, but other than that the movie kicks ass.

I didn\'t think I\'d like this new kid, Brandon Routh, as Superman, but I was wrong.
I like him the best of them all.

I\'m not really going to get into the plotline because I don\'t want to spoil the movie.

The special effects were spectacular, no red laser coming out of his eyes, they went for the Smallville heat vision effect.
The flying was spectacular, and a few slow motion bullet shots were really sweet.
Seeing a bullet crumple off of Supe\'s eye was cool.

The movie was awe inspiring and emotional, now I\'m not a very emotional guy, I laughed through Titantic, but this movie had me in tears almost the whole last hour, tears of awe, tears of joy, and tears of despair.

All in all fully worth the money to see in the theater.
It may sound sacriligeous (Sorry, General Zod) but this in my opinion was the best damn Superman movie yet.

Go see it.

Wohoo, great news Evil Dave

I\'ve been looking forward to this one for a while now and so was really worried I was going to be disappointed

I\'ve liked Smallville, so the few nods to that series e.g Lex being bald, are cool

Is Jonathan Kent still alive in the movie or not?

Um, Lex being bald is not a not to Smallville. Lex Luthor has always been bald. Every version, bald as a q-ball. The actor in Smallvill had to shave his head for the part because Lex is bald.
Hackman made a joke by wearing a bad wig in the original Chris Reeve Superman movie.

I hear he made a nod ot Reeve by pushing up his glasses with one finger.
Funny, since that was Reeve\'s nod to a stage clown whose name I forget.

Hmm...after seeing the pics of Superman in his low riding, but crotch packed shorts, I thought this was going to be very cringe-worthy!

Maybe I will give it a chance...although why I should trust anyone with the moniker EVIL DAVE makes me wonder....

I only saw a bit of the preview the other day, but now I\'ll have to keep that in mind...

Interesting to hear all the good vibe on this one (packed crotch excluded). I was REALLY put off when I heard they were doing yet ANOTHER Superman. Too many done and how can you top Christopher Reeve\'s? I might go check it out now.

I just got back from seing this movie. I liked it. I thought it was a very good homage to the original. All of the characters seemd to channel thier counterparts. Routh looked so much like Reave it was scarry. Spacey did a great job and I thought he brought home a better performance then Hackman. The plot was very moving.

My complaints with the movie where as follows (some spoilers)
Lois looked too young. I mean what was Super putting it to her when she was 16?
A certain character looked to old to be only 5.
I wish they would have fleshed the relationship out with his mother more. This moke took into account that you knew certain facts. Which is fair as the character of Superman has been around for a while.

Best quote of a move.

\"He\'s dead....he was killed with a piano\"

\"Lets get out of here\"

Just saw it today. I thought it was very good, and I agree with your review Dave. Nice touch where a guy was showing his photo to the newspaper editor, Superman as a small dot flying over the building. They are arguing about it;

\"It\'s a bird!\"
\"It\'s a plane!\"
\"No, it\'s...\"

Then Clark comes into the room. The whole film was very nicely done and the special effects were superb. Bullet crumpling off eye was the best bit. Small child was bloody irritating

!!!Spoiler!!!

Whole movie reminded me of Superman 1, it felt like a tribute film rather than a movie in its own right. I enjoyed it but it was overly long and not original enough.

Lex had EXACTLY THE SAME PLAN, ie destroy lots of real estate after buying/creating cheap land. The guy is obsessed. With the crystals he could easily have gathered the new technology FIRST before mixing it up with Superman. His plan was to use Kryptonian weapons to defend the new continent from very angry world powers, but he was just sitting around waiting for someone to notice him?

Instead of having Kryptonite weights around his neck and being thrown into a pool to drown, Superman gets a Kryptonite splint and thrown into the sea to drown. He is rescued by a woman who dives in after him.

Lex Luthor does have a point though, with all his advanced technology, the best thing Superman can come up with in terms of saving the world (in absence of an extra-terrestrial threat) is flying around in a cape putting out fires. Mmm... cure for cancer? I don\'t see the difference between dying in a fire and dying of cancer caused by environmental toxins, why would one intervention be considered interference and not the other?

I liked the movie. I didn\'t like the kid.

I didn\'t read this until now. But My wife said the samething Chern said. I guess I am to much of a comic fan.
