Murder by DVD?

Murder

Ok, maybe it\'s not just me, but is anyone else really getting tired of the crappy drivers out there talking on their cell phones, watching movies, and all other types of irresponsible stuff on the road.
If they can prove this guy\'s DVD player was on I hope they do charge him with murder.

If he was watching a dvd then yes I agree though I think that it would be very hard to prove.
I drive on the UK\'s roads alot and constantly see this sort of thing being done by truck drivers whether it be watching a dvd or using a mobile phone or making a hot drink. You can usually tell this sort of thing is happening when the vehicle in question begins to make sudden erratic movements as the loss of concentration is recognized and the correction to the driving is made.
I think all behaviour of this sort should be outlawed todays roads are too crowded for concentration levels to drop.
I am in no way saying that I am a perfect or even a better driver than any body else but I average around about 70,000 miles a year doing my work and spend a great deal of my life on the road.

I doubt the guy will be charged with murder as for it to be murder then the intent to kill would have to be proven. But I hope he is charged with manslaughter, found guilty & sentenced to a lengthy prison term.

Same goes for the joyriders, what\'s the point in giving a 12 yr old joyrider a 5 year ban from driving? By the time the ban has passed, the little pr__k\'s old enough to hold a licence, by which time some nob of examiner will pass him/her on their test as being a safe, competent & responsible driver ???

Sentencing in the UK is far too soft, crime rates are rising because people aren\'t being sent to prison and as a result the public have no faith in the jusctice system.

If somebody were to stand for parliament saying : \"I\'ll put all offenders in prison and if need be I\'ll spend more money building more prisons to house them. Which in an indirect way would help the NHS because there will be less injuries caused by stabbing/violence/joyriding for the NHS to treat\" then they\'d get my vote.

Flicking my rant switch to the off position now before I get carried away :)

Lock him up and chuck away the key..... They did some research over here, and found that the reaction time of mobile phone users equated to being something like five times over the drink/drive limit. That\'s the equivalent of around seven pints of beer. They turned it into an offence. Have the dippy t*ssers round here paid any attention?......:flame:

Don\'t forget all the rest....

Dippy people with faulty eyesight who either drive without their glasses on at all or their \'readers\' instead of their \'drivers\'.

People who drive in totally inappropriate foorwear...high heels or giant work boots.

People who drive whilst medicated...legally or otherwise...

Anyone in the UK who drives a chuffing great 4WD vehicle, but only does the school run and shopping...

People who have no idea about the space their vehicle takes up on the road and thinks that all roads are big enough for two vehicles. This person is often the same as the category above.

Hang \'em all:flip::bouncy:

I say fry him if he\'s guilty. When I first saw DVD players in vehicles I thought, \"That is a really stupid idea.\" there really isn\'t a need for it. It\'s right up there with camera phones.

Horse riding I dont mind.
Horse riding on the road is slightly annoying but is OK.
Horse riding on the road two or three abreast is bloody ignorance. And dont they realise they make my blood boil when they wave me past. Now I have sat several lesson on highway code and driving and correct me if I am wrong but these riders have not.I do not trust that they know it is safe to pass.Do me a favour and stay single file and let me make up my own mind.Better still ride your bloody horses in bloody fields where the poor bloody things belong.

the laws are already there...

It is such a laugh that states are trying to pass laws prohibiting the use of cell phones (unless it is a hands free model)/dvd players/etc...

for a couple of reasons.

1. There are ALREADY laws against distracted driving. Do we need another law saying the same thing?

2. Studies have shown that it is not so much the idea of using a cell phone that is bad, it is the CONVERSATION they are conducting that causes them to lose focus.

But as Finn mentioned some of the other things drivers do that causes distractions, I\'ll add a few...

Eating a meal.
Changing the radio stations.
Checking on \'the baby\'
Music so loud that you could not possibly hear a horn.

Unfortunately, most law enforcement agencies seem to target seat belt law and speeding laws as a safety measure.

If the police would start actually enforcing \'distracted driver\' laws I think it would be a great help.

I am guilty of many of those things as well.

Like the poster said before, I am no where near a perfect driver, but I do drive very defensively.

In Germany we have two major speed limits, usually 50 km/h in the city, sometimes 30 km/h.
WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE TO GO AT 40? THAT\'S WRONG IN BOTH CASES!!!!

I hate them.

Furthermore I am afraid of anyone driving a car whose head I can not see from behind them. You know, those robot car fakers..... and then there are old people wearing a hat; also they have a knitted dolly to put over a bloody roll of toilet paper and put that up in plain sight and this thing makes me want to kill and they do it while driving on the left lane while the right lane is being used by a tractor with a maximum speed of 20 km/h and this old a****le is also going 20, blocking the whole damn road and MAKING ME WANT TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHTS WITH .50 CALIBER MACHINE GUNS!!!!!!! AAAAAAAHHH!!!!

What great people in this country. What a great thing when someone who hasn\'t showered since 1983 and stopped brushing his teeth slightly before that can still drive a Golf (Turbo Diesel) with the windows down, trying to make me appreciate his smell which can not even be matched by a wet dog crapping rotten eggs in a manure pit while his face is so full of acne that it looks like a blind Steven Hawkins inscribed \"The universe in a nutshell\" onto his face using braille and he is so fat that his weigth can not be measured by conventional means anymore but needs the Richter scale to really do him justice and he stands directly beside me at a traffic light and I look over and he is actually eating a piece of cheese!

*gasps for air*

Then there is this guy..... I come home and walk towards my door, when I see, or better, HEAR a sound of pure misery to my right. I turn to see and I see some guy driving up to a traffic light and stopping. I shout over to him: \"Hey, I think your exhaust pipe is broken!\". He looks at me and reaches towards his radio, turns the knob and the screeching sound stops. \"What\'s up, buddy?\" he asks. \"Never mind\", I say.

I\'ll stop now.

I drive in work boots all the time and as long as your peddles are not real close its not a problem. Then again i only drive 4x4 trucks and my jeep. I wear a cowboy hat too but its a real one with no cow print.lol

finn, I think that while none of these are illegal, police investigating a crash may determine that they were contributing factors. Which will go badly for the driver.

As a lifelong motorcyclist (who is still alive) I have learned to watch forthe \'danger signals\', and anyone who is stupid enough to wear a hat whilst driving a car is an absolute and utter moron.

OK, this may probably not necessarily apply to America...but we don\'t have cowboys over here, just old, blind farts in Rovers and Volkswagens..:flame:

I like to blame all my near mishaps on the rain. Why just the other day I was driving (Carefully) through a light shower when I came to a stop sign..I stated to brake and the car swerved out of control! Luckily, I missed the car ahead of me (who turned out to be my neighbor) we got out and checked.. I did hit her lightly, but there was no damage.. that\'ll teach me to keep in the air and not on the ground! (Only funny if you read yesterday\'s comic..) :p

well, he still can get the murder charge. I know here in the states we have neglegent hommicide and pre-meditated murder. two different charges I know but neglegent hommicide is likely going to be the charge reguardless of the dvd or otherwise.

And people wonder why I refuse to drive anymore.

Yes, you read that correctly. I actually went down and turned in my license shortly after a 60 mph T-bone accident which left me with a back that will most likely never be 100% again, caused me to lose my job and my vehicle, and also made me so nervous on the road I became a danger while driving.

I was headed for work, it was Sunday morning about 10am and it was me, the guy ahead of my (my manager) and an off-duty cop behind me (although I didn\'t know it at the time). I was going about 45mph in my 1986 beatup Ford F150XL (large pickup truck my Dad gave me) and I was on the access road (known to others as that side road next to major highways in other other states... we call them access roads around here). Off of the highway going about 60+ comes a 1999 Ford Expedition (it was 1998 at the time). I saw he was going too fast, not slowing down, and going across four lanes. If he didn\'t slow down, he\'d hit me. I 1) hit my brakes, 2) changed lanes away from him, 3) hit my horn.

What does he do? Turns so he\'s DEFINATELY going to hit me. It\'s like he did it on purpose. If I had been in anything smaller, I wouldn\'t be here.

It\'s because of his action of turning so he would most certainly hit me that causes my nervousness on the road now. I get paranoid and don\'t trust any of the other drivers to look or know what they\'re doing. When I could drive again (several weeks later when I was off the Valium and Darvocet) I nearly caused three wrecks in one week because of my nervousness. At that time I figured it was safer for everyone if I just got the hell off the road and let someone else drive.

Needless to say, I\'ve saved a ton of money by not having to spend it on car payments, car repairs, insurance, or gasoline. :D

Of course, now that I\'m married and my husband drives, I\'m back to the automobile black hole, but the car is paid for (I don\'t believe in lengthy car payment deals...if I can\'t pay it off in less than a year, I don\'t get it).

We have some pretty stupid drivers here in Texas. If i feel the urge to go fast I find a nice dirt road and just go. Its usually my friends driveway which is as long as a road and made of gravel and red clay (My cowboy hat is still red from driving on it with no top on my jeep.) the only thing I have ever hit on that road was 2 rabbits and a deer who destroyed my brand new $300 bumper.:(

Cell-phones definitely annoy me, as well as stubborn folk who won\'t let you pass. The thing I hate the most, though, are the highway drivers who, even if you\'re going 105 km/h find any excuse to pass you, and then stare you down as they pass, as if pressing the gas a bit harder somehow makes them superior in some way. These are also the people you inevitably end up getting stuck behind for the rest of the trip, or end up passing a mere kilometer or two down the road

I\'m really most scared of older people. They seem dangerously unpredictable. They\'re the type of drivers indecisive children like me fear. They go at a slow, steady pace, but never show signs of slowing. You might have time to run across, but you don\'t know if they\'ll actually stop for you if need be, causing you to lurch forward, stop, run back to the curb, and dash forward nervously, only to find they turned the corner a block ago. They\'re also fairly likely to speed up at the last moment if they see a cocky, confident teenager step onto the street...I think they take it as a challenge.

There\'s also the question of senility. One of my moms friends was paralyzed for life by an older driver. She was parking, and as he crossed the section of sidewalk adjacent to her car, she hit the gas instead of the brake, driving, pinning, and crushing his entire lower body into the brick wall.

Biggest complaint - They should ticket tailgating and not passing while in the left lane. When washington had 2 70+ car pileups in one week because \"people were following too close for conditions to react\" as stated by the the State Patrol and they increase SPEEDING TICKETS. I dont understand.
I was pulled over for doing 68 in a 55 less than 1/4 mile from the limit changing sign. I didn\'t think anything about it and the Cop goes on to tell me that a speeding drunk ran a red light and killed an elderly couple just 3 days ago on this exact same road. He then tries to say that the speeding is what killed the elderly couple. Hmm . . . Take away the speeding and you still have a DRUNK who RAN A RED LIGHT killing an elderly couple. Argh!

Three lanes of cars all doing exactly 55 in a 60MPH zone torques me off too.
