Must see animation?

Just looking for some suggestions for good animated films, as I enjoy them.

I have seen most of the Pixar/Disney films, and am more interested in less mainstream stuff.

I have seen and liked some anime (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Trigun series), though the emphasis on martial combat in others I have seen got a bit monotonous.

The stop motion animation used in Tim Burton\'s animated features and Tool videos is also cool.

Any other suggestions?

I always liked Samurai-X
Full of Mystery and intregue, double crosses and misplaced loyalty! With a twisted love story intertwined.
You need to be sharp to follow it, it\'s all set in Edo Japan right at the end of the period when it was rife with backstabbing (quite litterally lol )...good stuff

Hmm, you\'ve already mentioned most of the stuff I\'ve seen, except for the more violent anime stuff. Perhaps one I could suggest is Ghost In The Shell. That\'s the one that influenced the Wacowski (sp?) brothers for The Matrix.

my recomendations:

Vampire Hunter - Bloodlust
The Cat Returns
Grave of the Fireflies - a strong sad but also totally magical movie

and if u liked Spirited Away you should defenitly have a look at \"Hauru no ugoku shiro -aka: Howl\'s Moving Castle\"

I\'ll second Howl\'s Moving Castle. That\'s one of my favorites.

@ TBS - Samurai X? I thought those were just depressing. Beautifully drawn, but after watching the anime series, seeing the OVA\'s was like drinking orange juice after eating chocolate.

Samurai Champloo! Great series but don\'t expect historical accuracy. :D

OK, I predict I may go on a long ramble here as I love animated films. This is all just my opinion of course, but you should respect it because I know my shit! ;)

For something a bit different try Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon, who is better known for his more recent animated film called Paprika (which is also worth a look). Perfect Blue is really interesting, dark and I guess rather Lynchian in its style. It\'s about an ex pop singer who starts to loose her grip on reality when she starts being stalked. Mature and affecting stuff for sure.

Tokyo Godfathers is a fine alternate Christmas story about 3 homeless friends who find a baby and decide to keep it. Er, it\'s hard to describe without making it sound crap to be honest, but it\'s good and quirky, with a slow, laid back, but rewarding pace, some great looking scenes and it is in no way as cheesy as you are probably imagining!

Heading towards the other end of the scale and complete fantasy, you should definately check out all of Hayao Miyazaki\'s work. Spirited Away is lovely, but I think I\'d go for the simplicity of My Neighbor Totoro or the all out crazy heroics of Porco Rosso.

Akira\'s great obviously. That\'s what got me into Japanese animation I suppose. Katsuhiro Ôtomo\'s recent passion project Steamboy, although horribly flawed, does have some absolutely jaw dropping steampunk technology on show and it\'s worth checking out for that alone.

Moving to US stuff, the Iron Giant is an often overlooked classic. It\'s directed by Brad Bird, so that should give you a clue of the quality.

Monster House was a film I loved last year. It was criminally overlooked by most people and deserved the Oscar. The director Gil Kenan shows masterful knowledge of characterisation and pacing. He\'s going to be an animation superstar in a few years. Oh, and it manages to nicely capture the childhood to adulthood transition phase of life that makes live action films like Stand By Me so successful.

I think the best traditional Disney is the Jungle Book, just in case you haven\'t seen it. The animals are so perfectly animated it hurts.

Best digital animation is still Toy Story. Perfect concept, amazing script (Joss Whedon and Joel Cohen you say? Holy crap!) and a brilliant look.

Watership Down manages to be terrifying, heart breaking and moving at the same time. It\'s brutal to watch though, have a box of tissues handy!

And if you can get hold of it, the UK TV series Trapdoor has the most amazingly vibrant stop motion animation you\'ll ever have the privilege of seeing.

I guess I’ll stop now. That should keep you going for a while.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have seen Ghost in the Shell, Animatrix, and Akira. All good.

Keep em coming!

I was also wondering if any of you know of a site or service that has old out of print animation or video available for permanent download? Amazon has some interface that lets you download such things temporarily to your PC, but they are automatically erased after a period of time.

There are two old animated stories that I would love to have in digital format: Rikki Tikki Tavi and Twice Upon a Time.

@Iono - Watership Down is excellent. I also thought Monster House deserved more critical acclaim.

Gunslinger girl pretty good
hum, lets see...
any Aridman <sp?> stuff is pretty good, and some of the student works (if you can hunt them down can be entertaining, if not short), the new (and old for that matter) Appleseed. That\'s all that I can think of at the moment, will get back if I can think of any more. :D

The old Cosgrove Hall stuff is pretty damn good. Their version of Wind in the Willows was absolutely fantastic and I can\'t imagine that you could cast the characters any better if you tried. Michael Horden as Badger and Only Fools and Horses David Jason as Toad (poop poop) being two of the best.

Also have you seen the Asterix films? Several of those were reasonably good most notably Asterix in Britain.

If you don\'t like them there\'s always Beavis and Butthead do America heh heh hm heh :moon:

I cant beleive noone has mentioned EVA yet.
Spot the Christian overtones and win a free prize!

Escaflowne also a good bet as not only does it have kickass fight scenes, it also has a very very engaging storyline.

Final Fantasy: Advent Children is the pinacle of CGI animation at the moment. Some scenes you will swear they are actual actors. Blink and you\'ll miss most of the fighting.

You could also check out Salad Fingers. But I would rather not talk about him :|~ Does anyone..have any..spooons?

Then theres Hentai, but I\'m not touching that with a bargepole...

Salad Fingers is excellent and a totally bizzare and screwed up way. My bro does an absolutely perfect impression of him too, and will quite often call me up as Salad Fingers to freak me out. He likes it when the red stuff comes out!

And if you didn\'t wanna talk about hentai you wouldn\'t have mentioned it would you? So come on, astound us with your knowledge! I\'m betting you like etchi, guro, shota or futa. Am I right? ;) (If any folks don\'t know what those things mean it\'s perhaps best you don\'t Google them. The joys of having a Japanese housemate mean I have a far deeper knowledge of this subject than I perhaps should!)

I second the recommendations for My Neighbour Totoro, Jin-Roh, and Perfect Blue.

I don\'t know if you consider these \"animation\" or if you\'ve seen them already, but Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly are cool \"rotoscoped\" films.

I\'m waiting for someone else to let slip, something like \"I saw the one with the ninja chick and the tenticle monster\" and then we can mock them for the rest of time

I am now emotionally prepared to get flamed for this one.

Not a movie per se, but I generally enjoy the series Naruto. Amusing characters, entertaining (though often very simplistic) plots, and consistently good animation. That is all the good stuff. Here is what annoys me: Too damn many \"flashback\" episodes made up of clips from previous episodes. Too many episodes not involved in the story\'s continuity whatsoever (who cares what kakashi freakin looks like?!?!).
Its basically turn-down-the-brain fun. It is in no way deep or emotionally moving but the entertainment is there and thats what I enjoy.

Also, my wife asks \"Is that the show where everyone yells all the time?\"
