My best bud died today

13 yrs of loyal service. Cried some tears but I\'m happy for the good times she gave me, just an overgrown puppy until the end, quick and painless, bye mate.

I\'m so sorry. I had to have my friend put down earlier this year after 16 years. It\'s not easy losing them even if it\'s for the best.

awww a westie!!!! :(

I have only ever had westies myself. The one I grew up with, he was our family dog since I was 3, I had to put him down on my 18th birthday (and I had a french final the next day in college). I was a wreck. He was really like my furry little brother.

Now I have one of my own and he\'s middle aged. I can\'t imagine how empty my life will be when he is gone.

I am very sorry for your loss. Just remember all the good times you had.

My wife & I adopted a westie when we first got together. He was with us for 15 years.

I cried like a baby when I had to put him down.

He\'s now under his favorite tree in the back yard.

Don\'t run out and get another one, you\'ll expect him to be the same and he won\'t. But you\'ll find it is too empty without one.

Thanks guys. I am sorry to admit that I have sometimes found the cmon community a little sentimental, but this is where I eat my words. It helps to post this, and I take back any cynical thoughts that I may have had in the past.

I suppose these things sometimes happen at the wrong time, because like FA I also have stuff tomorrow (new job) but I really don\'t feel like preparing. Airhead - quite right. I did not for a second consider cremation (personal choice), so she is buried under the rock in the 4th pic. I\'ll plant something there in the Spring.

Some of my favourite pics (though since I had this dog longer than any digital camera I ever owned, these are all mid to late age. The puppy pics are all tucked away in albums somewhere).

Happy dog

Sorry to hear your bad news. It\'s heartbreaking when you lose a pet. We lost our Airedale last year and I felt terrible for ages. (that\'s him in my avatar).

We decided we couldn\'t have no dog in the house so we now have another Airedale... best thing we ever did too!

yeah getting another dog will probably be inevitable but definitely give yourself and the family some time to get used to the fact that your beloved family member is gone.

We waited for 10 months before adopting duff and he was supposed to be the family dog. It just so happened that since I was home most of the day every day because I was just in college he bonded with me. He became my dog. He\'s my little boy and I love him dearly. But he\'s not the same as Pirate (my westie I had to put down) and never will replace Pirate. He\'s just another wonderful addition to my life.

I feel for you Jifl, my cat jumped out a fourth floor window 6 months ago, she survived but it made me realise pretty suddenly how attached to her I am.

Aye, we had a Westie for 13 years. Nastiest, greediest, laziest thing you ever saw... but we all loved her to bits. Give it a short while mate, then get another one, you know you want to...

I know exactly how you feel.
I\'ve had to have two dogs put to sleep over the years I\'ve been married, and both were incredibly sorrowful experiences. Not everyone realises exactly how much emotional investment we place in our pets.

I\'m also going to be faced with the loss of another. This time it\'s going to be harder to bareas she\'s the one who\'s really made herself part of who we are.
Chukki is a Cross Labrador/Who knows what and now almost 12 years old. (in human equivelance for her size about 110)
She has Liver diease which has caused eplilepsy, an enlarged heart, a periostial condition (bony growths on her toes) fatty lumps, surface and internal, and has recently delevoped Cushions Disease. (A growth in the Pineal Gland). Oh yes she\'s also the first dog I have ever know who has developed Crust Snots...I Kid you not!
She\'s no longer able to go out for any length of a walk and is quite content to wander into the garden, puffing and panting.

And despite all this she remains a happy little soul, delighted to have company and attention and is my constant companion while I paint. Even if I do have to carry her upstairs at night and down first thing in the morning.

So Jazz, when I say I understand how you feel, it is very true. You have my complete sympathy for your loss.

Dogs are worth every bit of emotional investment you make in them. Thing is: they always take it with them, they\'ll never fling it back in your face as humans can. Each one is always special and deserving of our investment in them.

Sorry for your loss, mate.

Thanks again for the sentiments guys.

Fieldarchy - Aw, cute dog. I can just imagine his character (dogs really do have breed-specific characters imho. I remember walking my little friend along the beach once and 2 passing girls couldn\'t stop laughing - shewould sit and refuse to move, no matter how far away I got. Only when I returned to within 10 metres would she bolt towards me and run past. They said that their Westie pulled the same trick all the time).

Dragonsreach - sorry to hear about your dog\'s problems. I think the key word there though is \"content\". My chum was going blind and deaf, and had some skin problems for a number of years. She had to be put on a daily course of steroids. This caused her to eventually lose the ability to control her hind legs after a while (it kicked in a week before she died). I pretty much knew then that it was borrowed time for her. The drugs also caused her to develop cysts/lesions/something like that, at the top of her lungs, so she was always breathless. We could have stopped the steroids but it would have caused the skin to flair up again. We could have kept her on the drugs and got through the bouts of paralysis, but it was distressing and confusing for her, and combined with the other problems there wasn\'t really any other kind option.

Vike - thanks for your kind words in the message you sent. I feel I know this place anyway as I have been visiting since broadband made pic browsing a less frustrating prospect, but it was a thoughtful welcome.

I think I will get over it quite well, but there have been times today that I\'ve really missed her, like when I didn\'t have to leave a little taste of my evening meal, as was our long-standing tradition. I suppose it will be a bit like giving up cigarettes. Even months afterwards there are times when you think \"Good time for a smoke\", and then feel crest-fallen when you realise that you don\'t smoke anymore. This will probably be harder, but I\'ll be ok.

Thanks again to all.

oh I just had to post something here having seen the pics of your little doggy. I\'m sitting here crying my eyes out, which is kinda silly really in some ways, but not in others. Being a pet owner I know too well how hard it is when they have to go, I really feel for you

On a lighter note, I love the pic where she is hiding behind the tree! She looks so cute and even after reaching the grand old age of 13, still had the puppy look about her. Big *hug* for you and your family

Aw you are getting me choked up now. I like the pic captioned \"Family\", she has that look she used to get when wagging her tail at a furious speed. She always looked like a puppy to me, even when she was old and slightly mangy (though I\'ve got pics somewhere when she was a real newborn and fit on the palm of my hand). Complete strangers would comment along the lines of \"New dog eh?\" and would be surprised when I told them she was 11 or whatever. I suppose it was because she was the runt of the litter. Thankyou for your your hugs, I will pass them on.

(Also I\'ve just realised, I hope that I have not distressed anyone with the final pic I took of my little dog. I was quite comforted by how peaceful she looked and didn\'t initially think of that possibility).

Yeh.. I\'m so sorry. Had to put my dog down a few years back because he had a tendancy to get nervous and bite people. I tried to stop my parents from putting him down, but in the end we lost him. It seems like everyone can sympathize with losing a pet, something this crazy human race has in common.
