So last time I was at this stage
BSB151.jpg

Next step is to do the base. I know youve probably all seen how to do this but a full WIP is a full WIP. So heres a little step by step on making a cork base
You will need the following
BSB001.jpg

Tear a strip of cork approx 40mm. Then break it into bits like so
BSB004.jpg

Make each sucessive piece slightly smaller.
You then glue the layers of cork to the base with white glue and allow to dry.

You should end up with something like this.
bsb_base_05.jpg

We now take a pair of tweezers and use them to even out the cork and make each layer look like they are one piece.

Removing cork from two differnt layers will help hide the join lines.

In the top pic is the colors I will use to paint the base here are some stages.

I would normally go to a lighter highlight but as I am doing a snow base I will leave it here so I have more contrast.
At this point I added the BSB to the base. Also I painted the crows nest for the look out Gnob.

So later I will show you how to do snow. I know you\'ve seen it before but I will still show you how I do it.
Sorry the BSB is so shiny I havent put the dull coat on him yet. I coated him with two coats of \"Ard coat as this is a gaming mini. I like to give the mini a few days to dry before putting on dull coat just to make sure there are no probs.

And in case you want to know what I use for grass its from an old rope I found, but you can buy rope for a few cents per foot.

Cheers.

he\'s looking great (or will do when you have got rid of the shine lol) i only have one suggestion really, add a little brown to the rock to break up the grey a little

Hmmm If I type what I want to say about that recoil the Vike will prob close my thread so cheers on that.

OK how I do snow bases. Youve probably seen this before but this is how I do it.
1. This is what you need
snow1a.jpg

I use a very small amount of blue paint in the mix to stop yellowing (Havent had any yet) It has to be a very small amount or you end up with a blue slushy mix. Hopefully you can make out how much I use.

2. Next mix equal parts of bicarb white glue and water with the blue paint mix (which is like a real thin wash approx 3-4 drops of it)
snow1b.jpg

3. Use a shape tool to add the snow mix and pack it a little higher than you need as it will shrink when it dries.

4. To finish of I use a mix of white glue water and a small amount of white paint on the snow to give it some protection.

OK so heres the finished product

I will post this for voting when I get a better pic.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

I paint my thumb.
Well, I for one found it very instructive.
I\'ll probably try that anytime soon.

This is a pretty plate, you shouldn\'t use it for crafting :p

Oh, and that BSB looks like a million bucks, I\'ll be looking forward for the final.

The base looks great. I\'ve done some very similar bases myself (except the snow... I really need to do more snow bases...). The standard bearer looks really nice, a little shiny right now lol, but very nice none the less. Great job, I\'m sure he\'ll be attracting all sorts of stares on the table (but thats true for most of your other ogres as well).

I know that I\'m no one to teach you anything as I think you are one of the best builders/converters/basers here. But I thought I would mention a few things. When you get your PVA glue, make sure it sais it goes clear when it dries, some of them especially the real carpenter ones go a bit yellow when it dries - that should be one way to avoid yellowing. I paint white where I put the snow, I use vallejo as I found that GW paint gives the snow the yellow taint. The other thing is that I use bicarbonate of soda instead of baking powder, I think it\'s more glittery and you dont get that much fizzeling when you add water and glue, I sprinkle a fine layer at last to get an \"even\" top. Maybe you can use some of this. :]

Thanx Manus I take all advice I can get. Yes the PVA I use definitely goes clear thats why I use that brand and I have yet to have a prob with yellowing but I do the blue paint just the same. I may try painting the base white there the snow goes then I wouldnt have to use it so thick. Will try on my next snow base thanx.
