Its my entry to the next contest, a bit ahead of time. I wanted to do something a bit different with this mini. - as always, comments most welcome!

that effect works pretty well but some of blending could be smoother, it looks like you have just drybrushed him

I think the drybrush comment may be a little harsh lol but smoother blending would lead away from this view certainly. A really nice effect, how does the figure look without the backdrop, is it still ghostly or does it need the OSL to sell it? There\'s a little curl of white on the sword pommel that feels out of place, bit of hair? Perhaps darken the bottom centimetre of his robes/swirl a little more? Nice work regardless :beer: , I\'ve voted, B.

Thanks

Thank you both for the feedback there, I agree with what you both say about the blending in need of smoothing - this is something I struggle with quite a bit actually so if you guys know any secrest please share lol. Some things I found difficult with this mini when I was taking photos of the chap was that initially he just looked really orange in the photos, although in real life he did not. To resolve this, I adding an extreme highlight of skull white, but this obviously \"roughened\" up the blending. A trade off, I guess lol. Anyway, thanks for the comments and the votes. Oh, by the way: BPI I just noticed what you mean about the sword pommel, it is in fact a small stray cat hair. Bad Kitty ! lol

i agree with freak it does looked drybrush i think some glazes would help smooth out the blends.

Cheers .sam.

Thanks for the compliments there Sam. I wanted to do something a bit different with this fella, he really is a great mini and (in my opinion) the best CMON Contest miniature CMON has hosted (irrespective of my paint job lol). I expect we will be seeing some excellent paint jobs from other contenders!

This is a nice idea, but there are problems making it look less impressive than it could potentially do. Mr. Inacage already mentioned the dry-brushed look of the light reflections. Another thing is that you have focused too much on the colour of the reflections and not the light, which is the key thing to \"sell\" an effect like this.

Here is the top image without colours:
osl-grey.jpg

As you can see, you barely notice the \"light\" reflections here. That means the value of the light reflections is very similar to that of the unlit wall. This enhances the painted-on look of the orange \"light\". Make it lighter, and you will immediately get a more powerful effect.

Cheers

Thanks Ritual and Supervike. I understand what you mean there Ritual ( I think). Are you saying that the mini really could do with being a bit brighter, as well the OSL on the wall ? Thanks again for the comments !

What I mean is that the light reflections on the ground and wall aren\'t really lighter than the \"unlit\" wall (not much, at least), just a different colour. For the effect to work, the reflections must be lighter than what the ground and wall would be without the light source in place. Otherwise the reflections will only look like... I don\'t know.... paint?

So, the mini is fine as it is, but the light reflections must be lighter than they are. Not as light as the mini, though, as it is the mini that is the light source. But, since the distance is close, you can go almost as bright as the mini is.

Use lighter paint! :duh:

Really, it\'s not more difficult than that. A good idea is to forget about the colour at first, especially when you work with a grey area like this. Just do the OSL as if the light source gave off white light. Focus on getting the light reflection smoothly blended and the right brightness. Then, when you\'re happy with the light you can colour it by applying thin, transparent galzes of the proper colours. In this case this would mean more yellow where the light is brighter and more red where the light fades out.

lol

Silly me, sorry about that. I am studying for my Sun certified java programmer so anything that doesn\'t end in a \";\" is Greek to me at present lol. Thanks very much for the help and advice there though, I shall bear that in mind next time . OSL is something I\'d definately like to try again, I think its great! Cheers!

lol excellent suggestion. But which class does that inherit from ? lol

public static void main(String[] args) {

String oslQuestion = \"How to improve OSL ? \";
String oslAnswer = \"Use lighter colours.\";

String sentence1 = oslQuestion.concat(oslAnswer);
System.out.println(sentence1);
}

I haven\'t entered any of these contests, no. A few years ago I used to enter some online contests to give myself some goals to aim for, and push myself. But, since I started visiting real-life contests and exhibitions I have found online contests less appealing and not enough of a motivation source.

Oh I see! I don\'t think I am brave enough to show my work in real life contests! Although I imagine I would learn a lot from the participants there !

Online contests are as much painting contests as photography contests. Seeing stuff for real is more rewarding and it feels more relevant to compete when the stuff is being judged in real life.
