My first 40k+Eldar Army

Hello CMON Community,

This got longer as I thought it will so a short intro seems appropriate.
The first part is about my Eldar color scheme. I\'m still unsure about it and need help with making the right decision here. The second part is about a Eldar/SM Diorama for witch I seek technics to make wholes into SM armors and to make wounds on a SM. Both problems are described thoroughly in this monster post but basically come down to those 2 points. So if ur interested now u can read on.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I\'m still getting stuff together for my first Army. I started building some test SM, I got from the starter pack back in 98 and really liked the models. After the first 3 I put the glue down to get me some modeling material and some stuff for my bases. I will go and buy me a foam coat to make some rocks in lava. I don\'t know yet if I dare to put them up, because they probably wont be worth a 3. But I\'ll see how I get out.

Concerning my Eldar Army; I\'m struggeling at the moment about the color scheme. Thought about either a Lava kind of Exodite scheme with lots of black and in contrast strong orange and red colors or a snowwhite scheme with white and iceblue colors.
I hate guardians already since I just dont come up with an idea for there painting, except colored heads and white/black armor. I would like to bring orange or red parts onto there armor but I really have to be careful about where to apply those. I cant use bright colors in the deep places on the model if it\'s a black model, since it would look flat I guess. On the other hand small bright lines in the deep places are what u do to achieve a lava effect. Well I got to test it. Some example pictures I made with SS the PC game to Warhammer 40k just to show you what i\'m on about.

The tool cant show how a mini actually will look it\'s very plain and has bad lightening/shading and u can\'t apply any sort of pattern. It\'s just about the color selection not where the colors will exactly be. Hope u dont get eyecancer from it.

black and shiny red
white and dark red
white and shiny blue
redish black and orange

Especially the black on the pics swallows all the details, while a black on a model would look totally different. I would aim for a more redish black with a broader range, so it doesnt look so onecolored.
I have read some guids about black. Most ppl used blue or green for shading. I will try, if red of any sort works. I also would like to get some OSL effects for the minis standing on lava(the SM). I\'m still not sure about witch color scheme so thats the nb.1 thing I would love to hear comments from you.

Second is my SM. I hate SM but the minis are so nice I can\'t resist doing somemore with them. More than just paiting training. They gonna be my first models and I already put the arms on and off since I realized I cant paint with glued on arms :p <----NOOB . I will put the arms on a needle and tear the needle into a plate of cork or wood, whatever I get and paint them seperatly. Than I gonna glue them to the mini and attach the plates and paint those. I feel this is much easier, though I never saw someone painting a mini not already build up. Is there a hidden trap I go into with not glueing them together befor painting? But I\'m getting off topic.

While I assembled my first SM I was struggeling with his pose. He always looked like he is hesitating or fearing something and thats not really like an SM should look in my opinion. But it brought up an idea in my head that slowly growed. As I completly messed up his pose, with placing his right food front (so he never could fire a machine gun (try it wont work for a righthanded person) I decided to make him look as he fears something. But what does an SM fear?
The mighty Avatar ofcourse. So now he is looking slighly upwards and looks unsure about running or staying. I want to create a diorama with multiple SMs (5 upwards), facing the mighty Avatar on a lava surface. The Avatar will have one SM pinned on his blade right through the stomach comming out at the back. He will hold his sword high in the sky to show off and to make the SM slip further onto it, like on a spit. The Avatars base will show him, as if he would come out of a lava pool(feet in the lava/ consisting of lava). A single glowing SM helmet and a bolter will swim uppon the base. All models shell get their own base but I will make a peace of terrain for it extra. It shell show the trace of the Avatar(in form of little lava pools he leaves where he stepped) . A bit more away from him, still close, will be another SM standing at the edge of the lava pool and with his feet sinking already in it. He can\'t run anymore so he shoots with what he can standing upright in a grim pose and firing of his bolter and bolter pistol(I know thats not with the 40k rules and I dont care). The Avatar will strech out his arm to grap this one. The rest of the SM will be a bit furhter off, looking at the scene(some firing on the Avatar). They will all be covered in blood, that is raining from the sky, as the Avatar spins the SM on his blade around.

I want them to get some OSL since they stand on glowing lava. I imagine a dark scenery with the Avatar and the lava bringing nearly the only light (and bolter fire). I want heavy battel damage on the SMs with weathering and stuff.

As I get my materials together I got my first problem/missing clear plan. I have a SM with no helmet and I want him to look special, more strong and brave than the others. He is standing right food ahead, firing his gun and looking mad at the Avatar. His body is turned away a bit, so his left shoulder nearly points into the direction he shoots at. I left the shoulder pad off. I want to place it beneath his feet, as if he had taken it off willingly. He is wounded at his shoulder, having a huge flesh wound. His shoulderblade was shoot through and in order to lower the pain and maybe get some medical help, as soon as possible, he put it off. But I got no clear image of how to make a proper wound at his shoulder and about how to make a good whole to the plate. It can\'t be too small like a needle whole, as u wouldnt see it but, if I make it bigger, I got to be careful to make it look like the metal really bursted, while not braking it to a degree, at witch u can\'t determine what it actually was. Some metal splitter in his arm would be nice aswell.

Any ideas, tips or tutorials on wounds and real wholes would be very welcome.

Atm I\'m stuck though, cause I miss materials. I will get them asap. Pics comming I got no camera here need to orga one.

Thx for reading and if anyone not toal noob or maybe another total noob, I dont care, wants to do somthing similar or exactly this or whatever, just go ahead but give me a message when u find out something useful :). Yeah I know it\'s completly mad to do something like that at the start but I wanna try and I hopefully will get over it, if I complety screw up :D . happy posting!

PS: The Sm gonna be black templars.

For the colour scheme if you are wanting an exodite style colour something in the red contrast style, maybe continue that style to the guardians, in the army you only need one squad of these if you wish to. The colour could be genreic for the whole army-nobody ever said that you have to paint how they have been painted in the books etc. So why not use the colour scheme for your guardians and whatever aspect warriors you use etc. Of the ones you showed in the examples the black with accented red looked the best. If your wanting a dark red colour maybe build up from a dark red/black mix to jus dark red highlights.

For doing damage on SM a good tool i have used is the pin vice (dont drill to deep but u can use it too make small knicks in the armour that look like heavy small arms fire)

Or for close quarters a craft knife should be suffice.

Hi again!

Hmm I like the black and red and the redish black - orange ones.
Black as a main colour also gives you quiet a good time safe, since you can start with a good black primer.
Having a red or blue army is a lot more work, well at least for my opinion.
A good black primer is the Vallejo spray. I also tried the GW one, but Vallejo has finer spray, because the put better cap on the can.

I have problems doing shading right on mainly white models. Still working on a good efficent way to do it. So that would be the reason I wouldn\'t paint a white army.

Woah, that sounds like a real big idea you have planned to do there. Make sure you don\'t get stuck in the process. I often start to rush when I do such stuff, which leads me to an ending I\'m not very happy about :D.

But it sounds really nice what you want to achieve there. You playing DOW right? I also started painting my Eldar army after playing many games with my DOW Eldar.
I also got my colour sheme already decided from DOW.

Keep it up! Looking forward to see some pictures of your Eldar Minis.
